iud and weight gain

Nearly 5 months ago, I had a Mirena IUD inserted. While the IUD is certainly a very safe and convenient form of birth control, Ive been EXTREMELY frustrated by weight gain that I feel is directly related to the IUD placement inside of my body. While my gynecologist believes strongly that there is no correlation between the IUD and the weight gain, I think there must be. Since the insertion, I have gained over 12 pounds (in 4 months) and my body fat percentage has increased from 26% to 34%. I work out VIGOROUSLY at the gym three times a week (or more) and I have not increased my dietary intake AT ALL! I am 42 years old, in very good health and prior to the IUD insertion was more physically fit than at any other time in my life. The frustration that this is causing me is nearly unbearable as I was SO IN CONTROL of that part of my life prior to this change. Although my doctor disagrees with my postion on this, I am scheduled to have the IUD removed in two weeks. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience and believes that the release of hormones into their system through a Mirena IUD could be the cause. Thanks!

I've had weight gain too although I can't absolutely connect it with the Mirena. I've also had a HUGE acne problem. My skin hasn't been this bad since I was in my late teens/early 20s and it takes forever for my acne bumps to heal. I'm seriously debating getting the mirena out but it is so convenient that it makes my decision hard. Good luck with your removal and I hope your weight goes back down!

I have the mirena and LOVE it. I have had no weight gain, no acne. My libido has increased (i had a decrease while on the pill). My periods have already started to lighten up. I personally don't believe there's any correlation between it and weight gain. I have had an easy time losing weight actually. Since Mirena releases only a small amount of hormone and it is localized I've found that I don't have any symptoms that I have it at all. Most of the time I forget it's there.

Hi Jenny,

I got fairly bad acne with the Mirena, and I don't have a history of it. I've had mine out since August, and I'm still battling to get rid of the last of it.

To the OP. I didn't have any weight gain on the Mirena, but suffered a host of other symptoms.
