So I have been on the pill for 3 or 4 months (can't really remember). And it has been a big pain in the.... I don't have any trouble remembering to take it but I have had a lot of problems with irregular bleeding and even when I have my *period* I bleed a ton. I was anemic and had low blood platelets after the birth of my son so my doc wanted the pill to help regulate bleeding to help with the anemia. It is kind of hard to do that when I bleed AT LEAST 2 weeks out of every 4.
Anyways I have noticed a pattern emerging that I start to get very down starting the week I start the hormone again and then the week of the non-hormone pills my mood lifts dramatically. I also have a rash af tiny red bumps on my arms that my family practice doc said is from hormones or the pill.
So my question is, can birth control cause (or contribute to) depression or extreme ups and downs?

Hi
Jill
It is amazing how much better I feel since going into the week of no hormone. I feel...NORMAL. I am myself, I don't cry at the drop of a hat. Given everything else I think it is time for a switch.
Nordette maybe? I took that before.. it was the same level of hormones throughout the month, and then there was the off week. My doctor prescribed it as a continual thing like Seasonale (my insurance wouldn't cover seasonale at the time, but Nordette was similar) since I am better off without my period, but after about 8 months I had to go off it, not because it wasn't helping reduce my period, but because we found out I am extrememly sensitive to estrogen and no matter how low the dose, it is too dangerous for me to take any pill that has estrogen.
There are so many different birth control pills that I wouldn't give up entirely. You just need to find the one that is right for you, and sometimes you have to go through a few bad experiences to get there. Hopefully the new BC works out better for you!
