Need advice about IUD!?!?!?!!
| Fri, 03-09-2007 - 10:50am |
I just recently gave birth to a beautiful baby girl on Feb. 1, 2007. However, it was unplanned. I was on the birth control pill before. I took it very religiously, never forgot a dose but ended up preggo. (best thing that ever happened to my hubby and I though :) ) anyway...I'm seriously thinking of getting IUD put in but would like some opinions about it first. So if anyone has any thing they would like to share about it PLEASE PLEASE fill me in!! Good or bad!!!!! THANKS!!!!

Congrats! I just had my first son in December and chose the Mirena IUD (hormonal one). I LOVE it so far. It's uncomfortable to have put in, cramping and spotting. Then you can have irregular spotting for even up to 6 months. I had irregular spotting for about a month. Some days I still have to wear a panty liner but it's not enough to really bother me.
We chose it because we needed something really effective because DH is on medication that can cause birth defects. The Mirena IUD is very effective, the only thing more so is permanent sterilization. Once it's in you don't have to do anything to make sure it's working. Some doctors recommend you check for the strings after you have a period. My period was already lighter then they were before my son. Some women stop having periods all together and lots say they are lighter. It's also good for up to 5 years. It seems a little expensive at first because all the cost is up front but after 2 years its cheaper then the pill. You should check with your insurance to see if they cover it.
If you have any questions I'd be happy to answer them. I'm a huge fan of it!

Hi cassiejill54, welcome!

Hi there!
I'm a 26 year old married woman that has never had children. I've had the Mirena IUD for a year and three months and absolutely love it!!
Here is what I like about the Mirena IUD:
A lot of women who have it put in say it hurts worse if you haven't had a baby. I had mine after my baby and it was only uncomfortable. At least once you have a baby and if you decide to have another one put in it probably won't hurt as much.
My favorite thing is the effectiveness of it though. It's nice to know I can't screw it up.
I've had less cramping since having mine in, so I'm sure that's different for everyone.

Make sure you take a good dose of ibuprofen before you go. That did help me and I've seen it recommended several times on here. Good luck on your appointment and hope all goes smooooooth for you!

good luck let us know how it goes. RELAX during it, it makes it much easier. I agree with the other post take an ibuprofen before hand and then afterward. I didn't have much cramping but some women do. Keep us posted on how you're doing with it. I love it now that I've stopped spotting all the time. I had mine put in at my 6 week appt. did your doctor already tell you they would do it then? Some doctors like to wait til 12 weeks.

Hi I just want to put my 2 cents in on the IUD. I have the paragard IUD I have had it for a little over a year now and I love it. It was painful to have it inserted and I have two children, but I absolutely love my hormone free body. My sex drive has returned, I like cycling naturally. It is so convienent. Fortunately for my my periods are no worse than before the pill. My insurance covered most of the IUD so I paid $35.00 dollars for ten years of protection. I think with the IUD you either love it or you hate it, but I would definately give yourself the 6 months it can take to adjust before you make any decisions about keeping it. My only regret is that I didn't get the IUD sooner.
