Condom breaking & the morning after pill

My best friend just called freaking out. Her (on and off again) boyfriend's condom broke as they were having sex. She's in the middle of her menstruation so she was wondering if she can still get pregnant and if she should even try to take the Plan B (morning after) pill. She only has a 72 hour window from last night so can someone relay any info for me to give. I'm a bit clueless with it all since I've only been with my husband and haven't had to worry about this. Thanks!

I think it depends on her cycle, but I have heard that you can get pregnant while having your period depending on how regular you are. It is fairly easy to get Plan B now, and since I was unable to be on a hormonal form of BC for so long, my doctor had me keep a pack on hand just in case. I guess it just really depends on her situation, and that is a decision she would have to make. I took it before and I felt a little sick to my stomach and my cycle was off a little the following month.

It depends on her cycle length, you can get pregnant on your period. Taking Plan B can make her feel sick to her stomach but if she wants to take it the sooner the better.

good luck

Well I had asked her how long she gets it for. She said usually it lasts 7 days but she's been known for having it for 3-4 days long too. She's regular (every 28-29 days I think she said?) I told her if she was very worried that she take it but she's worried that it might affect her chances of getting pregnant in the future if she gets married to him.

Well I can't say whether she should take it or not. That is something she needs to decide. It shouldn't effect her chances of getting pregnant in the future. Is she confusing Plan B with the abortion pill? Plan B is like taking a high dose of birth control pills but without the estrogen. She can ask the pharmacist any questions she has about the pill, and ask to read the insert. The sooner she takes it, the more effective it will be. She should make a call to the pharmacist, or you can research some information on Plan B for her, but nobody on this board can make the decision for her. With my insurance I only paid about $10 for Plan B. The pharmacy in my area sells it for like $23-$28 without prescription. For me, it was worth the peace of mind.
