Pregnancy q’s- response requested!

Here are the details: I have been on BC-pill since august (although I am a BC veteran I had just resumed after taking two years off). In January I visited my doctor and switched to seaonique. She recommended I take a few days off at the end of the first month to bleed, and it would be easier to get my body used to the pill. The first month I did experience spotting and noticed if I took the pill a few hours later. I decided to take some time off to bleed now that it’s the second month. I haven’t experienced any spotting this last month. I took the pill for 38 days with out a break. I took my pill Saturday, and have been off sun, mon, tue, and today. Still no period. I understand it’s normal to not start until after a few days. I read somewhere some women don’t bleed at all?? I have always had a period on the pill (I didn’t have a period during depo). One thing I didn’t consider is if you don’t have a period how do you know that you’re not pregnant?
Another thing to mention is besides the pill (which I took everyday) I also used a diaphragm with spermacide everytime.
I think I am just paranoid, but today it’s been all I can think about. So I’m thinking it would be close to impossible to be pregnant, but I would like some reassurance/feedback. Thanks in advance!

If not having a period makes you nervous it might not be the right kind of pill for you. Seasonale is designed so that you only have 4 periods a year. It does bother some women to not have a period every month for reassurance. Personally if you're using a diaphragm and spermicide on top of the pill you're probably safe.

If you take the pill within a 2 hour window every day and don't have vomiting or diarrhea within 2 hours after or on any antibiotics there's really no reason to worry. It can cause more break through bleeding though if you don't take it at the same time every day.

Hi lucky-girl,

The absence of your period isn't the only symptom of pregnancy. If that's the only symptom you're having right now, then it's quite possible that the hormones from the pill haven't dropped enough to cause a withdrawal bleed (your period), or there just hasn't been enough lining build up for it to shed.

If you had other symptoms like back ache, nausea, aching breasts, headache, fatigue, or other signs of pregnancy, then I think you'd have more reason to worry.

Plus in combination with use of a diaphragm and spermicide, the risk of pregnancy is about 1% (typical use, meaning not perfect) to as low as 0.01% with perfect use. So I really don't think you have anything to worry about :).

Thanks for the replies!
The paranoia got so high I took a pregnancy test and it came out negative. Although I wonder if I peed on it for six seconds instead of five, which the test says could influence the results. Heck it came with two; I imagine if I used the other one and it was negative too that should really ease my mind.
I agree that I should have less than 1% chance of pregnancy. The other signs of pregnancy don’t really ease my worrying as its normal for me to get head aches, back aches, and be tired. But having nausea and/or diarrhea after taking the pill, I had never heard of this as a symptom- so I will keep that in mind (I don’t have that).
When I first started seasonique I thought that if paranoia got too high I could take time off to bleed as some reassurance (this was suggested by my doctor). I really like the explanation that maybe the hormones in the pill haven’t wore off enough yet or I haven’t built up enough to shed, this makes a lot of sense. But also it seems like this may be a re-occurrence when it is actually time to bleed after three months- seems like it would be normal for my body anyway.
For now I plan to continue using seasonique. I’m just a paranoid person I guess, so I don’t think switching would help. Besides having less periods is a major plus for me. I stocked up on pregnancy tests as a way to ease my mind I might take them once a month or so. Also I will make an extra effort to take the pill at the same exact time every day.

Does anyone have anything they do to ease their mind?

One of the things that really bothered me was I had been drinking these last few weekends-
I don’t normally drink, and I figure there was no chance of pregnancy so no problems drinking. Regardless of what my final choice would have been had I had been pregnant I would hate to have un-knowingly caused harm to the baby by a few weekends of drinking.

Hi,

Some women do experience nausea on the pill, but in most cases this goes away after a few months on it.

Another thing that could have prevented your period from coming was stress. If you're not used to drinking much, this could have stressed your body out, for instance.

True true. I guess two kinds of stress: the drinking= stress on the body, plus I had some mental stress as well. Not to mention I'm not sure if this would even be a normal time my body would want to bleed. I just picked this time because I wanted to test it and it had been longer than 3 weeks on the pill.

I did end up getting AF early this AM, so day five. I guess I already knew it was normal not to start right away, but I never had a reason to be paranoid about it before. Thanks so much for all the replies :)
Cl-dancer somewhere you mentioned you have a routine for your diaphragm/cervical cap- would you mind describing it? I always make sure to wear mine but am looking for a better way to integrate it.

That sounds like a great routine, has definitley given me some ideas.

Do you wear the diaphragm continous too? I read somewhere its not recommended to be in for longer than 24 hours, so having it out long enough to clean it is enough time out? I have never had toxic-shock but thats something that might be a concern. I understand a cervical cap can be left in for longer time periods.
