low dose pills = less effective?

How do you know if a low dose pill is high enough for you? I've been on OTC-Lo for the past 5 months but I've been hearing a lot lately about how low dose pills aren't high enough in hormones for some people and that they have a higher failure rate, even if taken correctly. Is this true, and is there any way to determine whether one should switch to a higher dose? I've been using my BCP as my primary form of BC and I'm kind of worried now about its effectiveness.

There was a lot of buzz on this topic a couple years ago when Cosmo printed an article that cited one study that found a higher pregnancy rate among a particular group of women.
