IUD, how many partners feel strings?

I know this has been addressed in a poll on this board, but I want to know if there are studies that show how often a partner feels the IUD strings.

I am considering the Mirena, which would have been great to get when ds was 6 weeks but now he is 11 months and dh thinks it sounds like a better idea. Sheesh! Anyway, I have a friend who had a Mirena and had to have it removed because her dh felt the strings. Also, dh’s ex wife had a copper IUD and he could feel the strings with that one.

Are the strings different in Mirena vs copper? It just seems strange that the only two women I know of IRL who had the IUD had the same problem, and they are totally different builds. One is about a size 0/1 and one is at least a size 20.

Oh, and my first preference is Implanon but nobody in my area inserts them yet.
Thanks for any input.

Well I had the Mirena put in at my 6 week check up after my son was born. My DH can't feel the strings at all but my OB told me that if he could the strings could be trimmed much shorter. Also after time they soften up quite a bit and become harder to feel. It takes about a yearish to get really soft I'm told.

Just have your doctor trim the strings fairly short. I had to go back for a check up 1 month after it was in to be sure everything was ok and she asked me then if I wanted them trimmed.

Hi Holly,

I've had the Mirena IUD for about a year and a few months and there was only one time my husband said he felt the strings way back after I first had it inserted. He hasn't said he's felt it since.

Good luck!

I've had the Paragard since September '06. DH says he can't feel the strings.

I just got paraguard (copper IUD) last week and last night we "tried it out" for the first time. DH couldn't feel the strings. I tried to check for them a few times in the shower and could bearly find the strings myself.

Thanks. I really hope that you continue to be happy with your IUD. I still have concerns about it, but I am discussing with my healthcare provider this week.

My strings were cut too short upon insertion, and the majority of the time the doctors and nurses couldn't see them. However, my partner was jabbed on the end of the penis on several occasions due to them being too short. The fact they were too short also made it difficult to have it removed. Both times I went to have it removed, the strings had disappeared up into my cervix. During the second time I went to have it removed, I was at my new gyn's office, and she had to use something to grab it from inside the uterus. That meant having that device, AND the IUD pulled back out through the cervix at the same time (I didn't feel pain as the device was going in).
