I'm a 26 year old married woman that has never had children. But I do have girlfriends who have just had their first child and they also have been using the Mirena and love it for many of the same reasons I do! I've had the Mirena IUD for a year and three months.

Here is what I like about the Mirena IUD:

  • Don't have to worry about taking a pill every day
  • Lighter, shorter

Hi,
Congratulations on your beautiful son! My son is 11 months old and we still bf. I have used depo and Nuvaring during this time. I liked Nuvaring but I thought it was reducing my supply (it does have estrogen although in a really low dose, which is not recommended during bf.)

I currently use depo. Depo is a nightmare for some women. For me, it is not bad. My only complaints are lack of libido and moodiness. My moods are not horrible but definitely worse than on Nuvaring.

If I had it to do over again, I would have chosen Mirena IUD (the one with the hormone) right from the start. It reduces bleeding by an average of 90%, if I remember correctly. (I am not having periods for now because I am on depo and breastfeeding so it is not a big deal. The copper IUD is known to increase bleeding.) I did not choose it originally because dh was against it. Apparently he is more ok with it now, so I think I am going to try it when my next shot is due, May 3.

The minipill is also an option but it has a small window of time error so I was afraid I'd forget it.

Feel free to ask more questions and also if you have any bf concerns or just want to talk with other bf moms, there are some awesome bf boards here on ivillage.

I was on the mini pill for two years while breast feeding my son and I never had any issues with it.

Megan's post about the Mirena was excellent.

I just wanted to let you know I had mine put in at my 6 week post partum check and it was uncomfortable but not painful. I had cramping and spotting for a day or so. Then it stopped and I spotted off and on for about a month.

I haven't had a period with it at all so I don't know if I would cramp more or not.

Good luck
