Glad I found this board.
Got a question.... Had the copper IUD before worked great, had it for 6 years. Had another baby and got the new one, the one with the hormones. It has worked great for regulateing moods etc.. BUUTTTT I have put on 45 pounds in 2 years. Could this have anything to do with the IUD, I have heard that the shot can make you gain weight. With all the hormones in this IUD could that be a side effect as well. Oh havent had a period for 2 years either.
any help would be great.. thanks

I have been doing a lot of research since I am getting an IUD in a couple of weeks. So far for Mirena there is no proof that it causes weight gain, but I have seen some posts on other boards where people are blaming Mirena for their weight gain. I gained a lot of weight on Nordette, regular birth control pill, but it wasn't so much the pill but that fact taht it made me always hungry! I just kind of ate my way up a few sizes. My hunger just was never satisfied and I wasn't eating healthy enough. Not to blame it on you, but sometimes we need to step back and take a look at what else could be causing. Regardless, your IUD may very well be the cause, but it hasn't happened to enough people for it to be listed as a side effect. I havn't found anything concrete to suggest that it is something to worry about, but as everone is different, I wouldn't rule it out. I think the Depo-Provera shot is the only form of BC that is proven to cause weight gain, but despite the similarities, the Mirena IUD acts differently in the body.
Lighter or complete loss of your period is a possible side effect of it though, and something I am hoping for!
Good luck!
Hi

I agree with the other posts. I have the Mirena and LOVE it. I had spotting off and on for about a month after insertion (normal) but since then I haven't had a period yet (woohoo). Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I have not had problems with weight gain while on the Mirena.
I wonder if the weight gain is just because of getting older, metabolism slowing down, etc. I know my mom and I were just talking and she was just telling me that her body didn't bounce back after my younger sister was born as it did after she had me.
