IUD insertion and bacterial vaginosis

My doctor isn't requiring me to get screened prior to an IUD insertion. However, I've been off the Pill now for almost six weeks (no period yet) and now I have this really thick, white discharge. I have a feeling it is bacterial vaginosis. Does anyone know if doctors will still do an insertion while I have BV (if, in fact, this is what I have)? I made an appointment today but it's not for a few weeks. My period could come between now and then.

Thanks for any help!

I would ask them at the visit. I would assume that a gyno would know if they should test or not. Call ahead and ask if you want to be sure. I wasn't screened before I had mine put in but it was at my 6 week post partum appt.

I would definately tell your doctor about what you are describing to find out if he'd like to test you prior to insertion. Good luck!

Hi there,

It could be BV - does it have a strong fishy smell? BV typically smells like that, and can sometimes be a grey-ish colour. Sometimes you will get irritation from it.

Also, it could just be your natural cervical fluid kicking back into action now you have stopped the pill.

If you have concerns, you should get tested and treated for it now (if it is BV). The IUD will give it a media to spread on, which will make the infection a lot worse, and possibly very painful.
