I just had my IUD pulled out last Tuesday and got back on the patch. I started started the patch on tuesday. I was at the end of my period to MD said ti was o.k. I forgot to ask how long I needed to use a back up until the patch is fully effective. Anybody know how long I need to have DH wrap up? TIA

According to the prescribing information, if the patch is not applied in teh first 24 hours of the menstrual period, backup contraception is required for the first 7 consecutive days.
It looks like one week should do you. I know this board sometimes recommends backup for the entire first cycle, but I would be comfortable with one week myself.

Good luck, I really like the patch.

I am considering the IUD. Which IUD did you use and why did you have it removed?

Thanks
Holly

Hi Holly,

Thanks for the info. I had my IUD taken out because it had slipped out of place. I have had one in before (between kids 1 & 2) it lasted for 2 1/2 years. That one also slipped out of place and I got preggo with #2. My MD was all for putting a new one in if I wanted it, but I just got paranoid. If I've had two slip out of place then who's to say a third wouldn't, plus my PMS was CRAZY when I went off the patch, when I had the IUD put in. I was tired all of the time. I have quite a few friends that have IUDs and LOVE them. My body just may be weird or something.

That is strange. It just goes to show one thing doesn't work for everyone.
Thanks for the info. I hope you still like the patch. I am not using it now because i am breastfeeding and they are not compatible.
