Why do we all still take pills?

I've been looking into options to get off of BCP and hormones for awhile now. I don't really have any adverse affects resulting from the hormones besides mood swings and I think loss of libido, but I've been on them for so long now (3.5 years) that I can't really remember how I "used" to be. Anyhow, I was researching both the Femcap and recently the Paragard, both which seem like good options, but honestly, they scare the **** out of me.
Why? For the Femcap, I see all of these studies saying how ineffective they are, that 9 out 100 women will get pregnant using them...thats a lot in my mind.
The IUD...it just seems strange to have something in you for that long. And if there are no real side affects, why does it hurt so bad to have it inserted? And why don't doctors know exactly how it works? What if I'm allergic to copper?
I'm so used to being on the pill that its become part of me and I think I will feel "unprotected" if I try something new. But why do I put so much trust in that stupid little white pill? Why aren't more women using these other seemingly perfect options of Femcap and Paragard instead of remaining on hormonal pills? Well, I'm going to see my OBGyn tomorrow, we'll see what she says.
Thanks for letting me get that out...anyone else out there feel addicted to their pill and afraid to try something new?

I just went off the pill for the same reasons you listed. I got a Paragard last week but I don't trust it so we are using condoms. I'm having all these fears that it will expel or dislodge. I think we stick with the pill simply because it works. I never had a problem remembering to take them. I was always careful with herbs and antibiotics and would use a backup method if using these. I just trusted it. Now I don't know what to do. I just really don't want to go back on the pill because I feel so much better now.

I was on the pill for about 4 years as well. I then went off to have my son and had the Mirena IUD put in after I had him. I LOVE it. Its only uncomfortable to have put in if you've had a child and I've heard it's only painful for a short time if you haven't.
The only thing more effective then an IUD is permanent sterilization so there really is NO worrying about getting pregnant. The rate of expulsion is very low as well, especially if you've already had a child. If you have any questions about it please feel free to ask.
