Questions about the IUD

I'm a newbie to the IUD world...just started reading about it last night!! I guess the overall effects sound really good. But is it weird having something in you all of the time? To me it seems like there is a risk of disease or something having a foreign object in your body for such long periods of time. Also, I read somewhere that IUD's basically cause abortions to happen and thats how you don't get pregnant. While I didn't really believe that, I can't seem to find anywhere that says exactly how they work. I don't know, they seem good in theory but pretty scary in reality. I'm going to see my Gyn in about 3 hours, so we'll see what she has to offer.

If you haven't gone to the gyn yet, here is a link for you. From what I understand, while the IUD does not always prevent ovulation it usually prevents fertilization. This means that abortion is not the primary means of contraception with IUD. I'm planning to get an IUD in a month or two. Let us know what you learn and what you decide!

I have an IUD and LOVE it. You can not feel anything, other then the strings when you try to feel them. There is a small risk of infection when they insert the IUD but after that there's not a risk for infection.

It's a great form of BC because it's super effective, the only thing more effective is sterilization. You don't have to remember to take anything every day. There's nothing to put in or on in the moment.

If you haven't had any children it can hurt to have inserted, take some ibuprofen beforehand. If you have had a child it's only uncomfortable. I had mild cramping for 2 days and spotting off and on for about 6 weeks. Some women spot for 3-6 months though. I haven't had a period since though and that's SUPER nice.

The other poster is correct. The IUD's primary way the IUD works is preventing ovulation, then stopping the sperm from reaching the egg by changing the consistancy of the mucus.

Ask any questions you have.

I'm a 26 year old married woman that has never had children. I've been using the Mirena IUD for a year and three months and absolutely love it!!

Here is what I like about the Mirena IUD:

  • Don't have to worry about taking a pill every day
  • Lighter, shorter
