PAINFUL period after discontinuing Pill

I recently discontinued the pill (Estrostep), after using it for just over one year. I wanted to feel my own "emotions" again and be freed of all the side effects associated with using the pill. I am also a smoker, extremely resistant to quitting :), which creates obvious concern as well. I have been using a diaphragm since I stopped the pill a month ago, and I love it!
The problem I am having is with my first period after discontinuing the pill. I was hoping to either skip it or be late, but it came right on time, and WHAT A WHAMMY! This is by far the most painful and heaviest period I have had in a long time, and I'm wondering if this is something other women have experienced after discontinuing the pill. I am 33, never had children (and don't plan to), and I have a long history with painful/heavy/irregular periods (which was in part the reason for starting the pill in the first place). I'm wondering if I have these awful periods to look forward to now, or perhaps it's just going to be with the first "natural" cycle? I have had issues in the past with Fibroids/Polyps (even had them surgically removed), but I have recently seen my OB/GYN and confirmed that they have not "resurfaced".
I'd appreciate any comments/suggestions from those who have had similar experiences.
Thank you!

Hi dog_fotog, welcome!

Thank you to Jill and sweetmissmagnolia for your replies. Sounds like I have a lot of fun to look forward to. Guess I can just hope for early menopause, right? LOL! It's really sad that I'm actually looking forward to that - especially after witnessing my mom go through it. I would just like to get it over with and move on from dealing with this every month.
Again, thank you for your replies!
If things turn out to be as unpleasant as you expect and you don’t want to go back on hormones there may be an alternative, depending where you are in your reproductive life. If you are certain that you don't want more children then you might want to consider talking with your doctor about having an endometrial ablation. An ablation removes the lining of your uterus and minimizes re-growth. It will decrease your flow and PMS considerably but is not an effective contraceptive
