Loestrin24

Hello everyone! I'm new to this board. After TTC last year with no success and recently thinking that I had accidently conceived, starting my period, and being reminded that I have PCOS, I decided at my doctor's appointment today to request BCP. My doctor gave me a sample of Loestrin24, as well as a prescription for this pill. When I returned to work, I did a google search of Loestrin and found a message board where some women had some very horrible things to say about this pill. I'm now a little nervous to start the pill. Is anyone taking or has anyone ever been on Loestrin 24? I've been a member of iVillage for sometime now and value the opinions of those here?

What's the word on Loestrin 24?

TIA!

Well, I didn't have any horrible complications or anything,,,,, except for the little fact that I had been taking it since my baby was 6 weeks,,, AND I GOT PREGNANT!!!!!!!!!I was taking it correctly, so now my daughter is 7months and I am 16 weeks pregnant. Even though they say its not gauranteed, it still pisses me off. I know this doesnt help,, nut I jus had to vent. Sorry, hope you find what you are looking for.

Thanks for your input. I'm sorry the pills didn't work out for you. My doctor seemed very optimistic about them and seeing as how when I was TTC I couldn't, I shouldn't have any problems on this pill.

Take care!

Every pill has someone that hates it. Maybe more than one. ;) Loestrin 24 is not a new formulation, just a new dosing schedule (24 active pills instead of 21). Loestrin, either the 1/20 version or the 1.5/30 version, has been around for a long time. I took Loestrin 1.5/30 for about four years about five years ago.

Some women do really well on Loestrin. Some women don't do so well. There's no way to predict how you'll do without giving it a try. It is a high-progestin pill, so for some women it is hard to take. I had problems with vaginal dryness, dry skin, and eventually atrophic vaginitis, but it wasn't the right pill for me. Other women find that they have light and predictable periods and very few side effects (I did have light and predictable periods).

Why not give it a try? If you don't like it, you can stop taking it. The hormones go away within a few days (thus why you have to take it every day).

Good luck! I hope it works out well for you!

Thanks for the advice. I'm definitely going to give it a try. I have PCOS so the BCP are supposed to help control the symptoms, minus proper ovulation. In the past when I was on birth control, I did not have any problems with the pills. It's just that when I stop taking them it takes me a long time to have a cycle again. I hope they work, though, cause I don't want to have to keep trying different ones.

My 2 cents -

I take Loestrin FE 1/20 and I don't have any issues. I do feel a little water retention around my waist line every now and then, but no other weird symptoms. I'm still at my normal weight as I was before I started taking BCP.

Just try your best to take it at the same time everyday (as true for most pills) and see how it works for you. Good luck...

I've been on Loestrin 24/FE for several months (6 or 7, I think). At first, I struggled with spotting. Last month, my period didn't show up. (I'm not pregnant...took a test!) So, it's been a little stressful. I think my body is starting to get used to this pill, though. I do find that I have to take it as close to on time as possible. Even 30 minutes one way or the other can result in spotting. That happened this past weekend although to a MUCH lesser degree than in the first months I was on it.

Good luck!

Wow! Thank you. I had better definitely set my alarm then. I've never had any kind of spotting with or without birth control so that would totally freak me out. I'm bad with pills, but hoping this one goes okay. Thanks for all the advice.

That's an individual thing--I could be off by an hour or two either way and sometimes more and I never had problems with spotting when I took Loestrin. Some women do, some women don't!

I took LoEstrin24 for a little less than 2 months (yes, I didn't finish the second cycle). Not to skew your judgment but I do think this is the worst pill I ever took. I do realize that results vary for everyone but this particular pill is highly androgenic - meaning more likely to grow hair in unwanted places and lose in some wanted ones, break out and retain water. I started losing hair, was extremely bitchy, felt like a big balloon for three of the four weeks and could only sleep every third night - eventually I couldn't take it anymore, so I stopped taking it. As a reference, this is the only BCP that has given me such side effects and I have tried five different ones (I'm currently on Yasmin and really like it). I would suggest that, if you didn't have any side effects with the pill you were on before, you go back on that pill, but that's just my opinion.

I've decided to give it a try. I already have hair growing in unwanted places due to PCOS, so hopefully this pill will work against that. I haven't been on birth control since 2004, and I can't hardly remember what those were. My doctor prescribed them to me, so I'm guessing she knows what works with what. And if they don't I'll either try something else or go back to taking nothing at all. But thanks for you input.
