Hi Everyone!

I'm just back from my gyn appointment and this doctor was SO nice. I switched doctors because the doctor I was always going to would not give me an IUD. This doctor said he would give me the IUD and he also told me that if I wanted and I was serious about not wanting children he would tie my tubes!

He did say that he would do the Essure procedure which is said is done through the vagina and takes 3 months to be effective. Or he said he would do a procedure "through the belly" and that was effective immediately. I'm so excited. But I'm hoping for some advice...

He said they are both done out patient in the hospital, can anyone give any information on either of these methods? Right now I'm leaning towards them instead of the IUD.

Thanks Guys!

I remember someone talking about having the essure done.

Are you really sure you don't want any (more) kids? If you're not 110% sure then I'd suggest the IUD since it's super effective but not permanent. I'm not trying to tell you to not do it just wondering.

Hopefully you'll see the post about the Essure from whomever that was or Jill will know since she's wonderful too.

The links and essure web site is a great place to start. I've talked to several woman who have had essure done and it seems like a breeze, but everyone is different. I would like this procedure done as well, but I'm waiting until I'm a few years older or move to an area that is more respectful of my reproductive choices. Someone dropped by one of the other boards I post at and let us know about her experience getting essure and an ablation (which can eliminate or very much lighten your period).

Good luck exploring your options and let us know how it turns out :)

I had a tubal ligation in December... here are some links to posts I made after the surgery:

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhcontracept/?msg=20850.1 - 1st post after surgery.

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhcontracept/?msg=20902.1 - 1 week update.

http://messageboards.ivillage.com/iv-bhcontracept/?msg=20995.1 - 3 week update.

It's now been almost 4 months since the surgery and I have no complaints. My periods are longer and heavier than when I was on the pill, but nothing too terrible. My scars are just tiny little things that I barely even notice. My libido hasn't returned yet, but I'm still hoping...

I do not regret having the surgery at ALL. I am SO glad to be off those pills...

Good luck to you in whatever you decide.

I am going in for the Essure procedure on May 18th. If you go before me, please keep me posted on how it goes. I am sooo nervous, mostly about pain. I do not do pain very well.

Thanks.

I had the Essure procedure done in 12/04, at the same time as an endometrial ablation. The Essure procedure is not an invasive one, much less than a tubal ligation, and permanent, whereas the IUD is not permanent.

Essure involves hysteroscopically going throught the cervix and placing tiny coil springs into the fallopian tubes, causing scar tissue to slowly build up, therefore blocking the tubes and preventing pgcy. For three months after the procedure you must use a backup form of BC, and then an HSG (hysterosalpingogram) will be done to ensure that the tubes are indeed blocked. (An HSG involves injecting dye via the cervix while an X-ray is taken to see the fallopian tubes.)

Essure is done as an outpx procedure in the hospital, and there is some cramping/bleeding afterwards, but it's not too bad.
