So i'm starting on BCP and while at the doctor's office I was told to start the sunday after I got my period (or the day I get it should it be sunday). What I don't understand is why? I can see from the point of view that it will be a proper week starting on sunday, but what is the reason for not starting until after I get my period?

I would have asked the doctor, but I didn't think of this until I'd left...

Starting during your period insures that you are protected by the 7th active pill I believe.
Jill might know for sure.

so, the point then is just to know that you would have gotten your period had you not been on the pill, then? I mean, I don't mind waiting if there is actually a health reason to do it, but if not, I'd rather not bother.

As for the back-up, I would always use it anyway.

Besides making sure that you aren't pregnant, starting the pill during your period is the best time to start it because when you have your period your body isn't in the middle of another hormonal process.
