trying to decide on BC options

well im a little over half way through my pregnancy now and im starting to once again think about my BC options. I have to decide if im going to try a hormonal method or go with a non hormonal method. I was on BC about 3 years and had all sorts of problems i never really did find one that worked and dident give me side effects. the main side effects that i had were No sex drive, No lubercation, paine full intercourse, Migraines, Mood swings, and depression. after i quit the bc my periods returned the next month but it took us almost 2 years to acheve pregnancy and it took probably about 6 months for me to start feeling like my old self though i still have problems with the lack of lubercation and painful sex. so do i give yet another kind of hormonal Bc a try or should i just go with something like a diaphram and condom combo.? what would you do if you delt with all that?

i guess i should say that i am planning on brestfeeding or im hoping to brestfeed for a year. So im a little concerned what taking a hormonal BC could do to the baby i know they say the mini pill(i believe is what they are calling it) is safe during brestfeeding but how mutch of that is the baby getting through my brest milk and what would it be doing to the baby.

I have the Mirena IUD (hormonal). You can have it while breast feeding. I had it put in after my son was born in December. It went in at my 6 week check up though I've heard some docs don't do it til 12 weeks. We tried for a year an a half to get pregnant with our son.

I really like it. I was on the pill before we started to TTC and I had NO sex drive on it. I do not have that problem with the IUD. I did spot off and on for about 6ish weeks though. Since then though I haven't had a period at all. This IUD is good for 5 years. I had my son vaginally and having the IUD put in was uncomfortable but not very painful (I've heard it can be for women who haven't had kids). I took some ibuprofen before and after for a few days. I spotted for about 3 days and then it was sporadic.

If you have any questions about it feel free to ask.

whats the odds of having an alergic reaction to the copper. I have to be careful with jewlery because i seem to be alergic to alot of it. So im wondering if i could have a problem with the copper in and IUD. i dont know if i would have an alergic reaction to the coper or not. well probably be trying for another baby in 2-3 years.

The Mirena IUD may still work even if you did have a sensitivity to copper.

Ug i can tell this is gonna take a while to figure out what to do. thanks a bunch

Just so you know an IUD is very effective (only sterilization is more effective). You really are least likely to get pregnant on it then any other birth control. The Mirena is also known for lessening periods but the copper one isn't.

Have you tried Depo? I've been on that for about 5 years now. The side effects have been fairly mild for me - no weight gain, some loss of sex drive (but I've also been dealing with depression), and occasional spotting. But it has been very convenient and dependable.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

being that we had sutch trouble getting pregnant this time I dont want to start depo. Iv read that it takes some women a long time to get pregnant after they have been on it. I also read an artical about bone loss and long term use of depo so thats not something i want to go near. My grandma has ostioprosis i dont want to increase my chance of getting that. also considering my history of migraines and hormonal BC making them worse i dont want something i cant stop taking if i do have problems. I also plan on brest feeding for at least a year im not shure if Depo is baby safe and what the hormones could do to baby. thanks for the suggestion though. Im starting to give a diaphram more though again i know the effectivness of htem goes down after youve had a child but DH said he is ok with that risk being we want more kids in the fuiture. I charted to get pregnant and im starting to read about using FAM i think mabie between those two we would be prity safe. Dh hates condoms so thats not a verry good option except for mabie on occoasion. the only thing with using FAM we would have to be a little more causious because I got pregnant this time after not having had sex in 6 days prior to ovulation. so mabie that could be a good option for us. My dr will probably start discussing bc options in a couple more months when i get closer to delievery. Im not shure how open she is to them though i guess well have to see i hope she is open to discussing different options with me.

Hi,
Depo is safe while bf, but for the other reasons you mentioned, it probably is not for you. Just thought I'd throw that out for anyone else who might be considering it.
There is a natural family planning board at ivillage. I don't recall whether anyone gave you the link.
