Pending IUD insertion

Hi Everyone,
Well I've finally decided that I'm going to have the paragard IUD inserted. I think I will get my period this week so I just had a question about what everyone took prior to insertion? I've never had children and my doctor said it 'could be very painful' to have it inserted. He didn't offer a prescription though, just told me to take 3 motrin 1 hour before. What all did everyone take? I have motrin but I also have aleve, advil and some prescription percocet. I just want to be prepared. I'm very scared about the pain part!
Thanks for your suggestions,
Amy

Hi there, first of all don't get yourself any more worked up about it than necessary- the less tense you can be the better it will go. I took Ibuprophen probably 4 pills (800 mg) and that was all I needed. I have 2 kids but both c-sect so I never have been fully dialated myself and I can tell you that for me it was very painful- but only for about 1 minute. Afterwards I didn't even have cramping or anything later in the day, I just went about my normal life. He started to insert it and that hurt for about 30 sec- pinch/cramp pretty bad, it wasen't working so he needed a diferrent instrument so started over and it hurt the same for about another 30 seconds and he was done. I was moaning pretty loud and trying to do heavy breathing to stay relaxed, but honestly it was over really fast.
Good luck and remember to try and relax your body as much as possible. It should be a really quick procedure.

I took 4 OTC ibuprofens about an hour before I went in. It was uncomfortable (I've had 4 children, 2 c-sections), but wasn't very bad, and what was uncomfortable, didn't last long (couple of minutes). As PP said, try to relax.
Best wishes
Sallie
Thanks everyone for posting!
I went today and had the Paragard inserted! I was a nervous wreck I have to admit. So of course I found it to be VERY painful. Granted it is quick but it did hurt, and I couldn't help but try to squirm away from the doctor and he told me that I had to stay still that it was very dangerous if i moved around. It was when he was doing the measuring, not the insertion. I was happy when it was over. I just couldn't relax and was so tense and my legs where even shaking!
Overall I'm happy its over. I still feel sort of weird, I can't describe the feeling, not cramping so much as just strange.
But I just wanted to thank everyone for their posts and reading all mine. It's a blessing to be informed

I wonder if the legs shaking may be a reaction to having our cervix messed with. I know it can make you light-headed and even make you pass out.
Glad you're not cramping now.

(hugs) I hope you feel better in a day or so. I didn't have any pain when I had the Mirena inserted but I've had a child so I'm sure that's the difference.
Take some ibuprofen for a day or two to help with the discomfort and let us know how things are going.
