Hey there
I have a question. My doctor changed me from Marvelon to Yasmin becuase I've been on M. for like 4 years and its not working for me anymore. She said that I would be protected on the new pill immediately. I have heard you have to wait 7 days before having unprotected sex. Am I protected? Just need some peace of mind. Marvelon is 0.15 mg of destogestrel and 0.03 mg of ethinyl estradiol and Yasmin is 3.0 mg of drospirenone and the same of E.E. if that helps. Also, I've been reading this board and it looks like a lot of people have gotten preg. off Yasmin, is it okay? I just can't be taking any chances.
Thanks a bunch

Hi legallyblond2005, welcome!

well I never used Yasmin itself but my doc did switch me from one brand to another and I didn't have to use a back up with the switch.

Yasmin has had to go through the same testing as the other birth control pills on the market to prove that it meets the standards for safety and efficacy--it is just as reliable as the other combination pills on the market. Where the biggest difference comes in with pregnancy rates and the pill are the individual users and how well they take the pill.
As far as using backup, I usually do use backup the first week when I switch even though it's not required. It's just something I do that makes me feel better. You need to make sure you're not ovulating--that's the point of taking the pill. If you're not ovulating in the pack before you switch, and if you start the new brand at the same time you'd start a new pack of the old brand, there's no reason why you should start ovulating with the new brand as long as you're taking it correctly. The reason you have to wait seven days when you start from scratch is in case you ovulate early in your cycle, just to make sure you don't ovulate before the pill has a chance to stop ovulation (and the safe zone there is 7 days).
I hope it goes well for you! Good luck!
