Ive been on depo for id say about 7 months or so... its been pretty good, i dont really get my period, just spot a little in the middle of the cycle and maybe a little at the end. but i wa wondering if there is anything bad with taking the depo shot for a long time or if it messes you up somehow. i know you should take calcium with it and i do take some with my multi vitamin, but just wondering about all the risks.one of the main reasons i like the depo shot is because i dont really have my period ever so its very nice not to have it.

I took it for several years '94 till '00. I never had a period, sooooo nice. It took me about 9 months to have a period after I came off of it. I didn't really notice any problems I had with it. I did like taking it, just stopped because of life changes at the time. I had no problem conceiving about 1.5 years after taking it (didn't try before that). I turned 40 last year and have noticed the beginnings of arthritis in my hands and feet. I can't say that it's b/c of the depo, although I've read about the bone loss. I am on my feet constantly at work 12 hour days (20 years of it now) and use my hands typing, writing, holding things, etc, so these aches are probably from that as much as anything.

Best wishes

Aside from the bone loss issue, the biggest problem is that it can take 18 months to two years after stopping depo for your cycles to return to normal, so if you plan to conceive in the future, you might want to consider changing to another form of birth control well before then.
