Nuvaring and increased hunger??

Hello All,

First, I'd like to say I completed my second Nuvaring and I do like it. However, my appetite seems to have increased... or maybe it's my imagination. I am a runner and have been building mileage; however, I seem to recall when I went off the pill for a few months prior to starting the ring that I was not as hungry as when I was on the pill. Do the hormones cause hunger increase? Has anyone noticed an increase in appetite? Fortunately I've been trying to watch it and I've not gained any weight (so far). Still, the call of the chocolate chip cookie has been very loud recently :) Thanks!

Yes! Yes! Yes! You are hungrier and you crave carbs the most. I have found its worst with the nuvaring than the pill. I feel the reason is the progeston is steady with the ring than the pill which peaks and then drops off. I used to take my Alesse at 10pm...so basically I slept through the "peak" time. I wasnt ravenous in the am. So by lunchtime I would have a big meal and could usually nibble at dinner and I was fine. With the ring those levels are steady at all times. You dont really have a 'peak'. So now I wake up ready to eat...and I suddenly craved cereal...and I keep that feeling all day. I am actually hungry at night now. I never used to do that. I havent gained any weight because I can deny myself but I cant lose anything. I gained 10lbs trying to find a replacement for Alesse when that went off the market...and nuvaring will not let me lose it except during my week off. I usually lose 2-3 lbs that week but it comes right back by my 2nd week back on.

Yes! I am towards the end of my third ring or 3 months of use. So maybe my body just needs time to adjust. At the same time since September of last year I have been on 4 different bc. I went from Alesse, to Aviane, to Yaz, to Nuvaring. All the changes caused me to gain 10lbs and no matter what I do, its not moving. But once I get over the 3 month adjustment period, then I will try again to lose the weight. We will see...

Some women do find that when they take certain progestins that their appetite increases.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance that it's not all in my head! Judie - thanks for the suggestions. I went to "Nuts to You," a store near my office, and bought some dried pineapple and choc-covered prunes. You're right - they take off the edge without having to eat too much. As I was standing in the pharmacy line today I was thinking what a hassle B/C is for all of us. There is no perfect method! You just have to find the lesser of all of the evils, I think.

Did you know that your sleeping problems could be caused by the foods you eat? Many people suffer from poor sleep cycles, and food is one factor that can negatively or positively affect your sleep cycle. vegan
