is more than one method better?

My boyfriend and I have just started to have sex, and we currently use condoms. Some of my more sexually active friends have told me to go on the pill in addition to using condoms. Is this really necessary?? My periods aren't regular to begin with, and I really don't want them coming every month. Any advice would be great :)

Great backup to a condom is an applicator of spermicide.

I think that would be determined by your health....and lifestyle...meaning if you have no health issues other than wanting birth control and to regulate your periods you might want to try the pill.Your dr could help you pick which one is right for you....some methods including IUD and the "shot" sometimes stop periods for some women...but not everyone and sometimes for some women it does but after a few months.....good luck in finding a method that will work for your situation.....

Hey chica!

After plenty of contemplation I decided to become sexually active about 5 months ago with my boyfriend. I was mostly concerned about being safe and being protected. I don't consider myself a dumb girl, so I wanted to be smart about the situation! It was totally scary at first! I thought about taking pills but I haven't found a pill with side effects I was comfortable with. I have a thyroid condition so I did not want to start taking something with hormonal side effects due to my illness. We use condoms and I always use spermicides as well. It's not the most fun, but it's just the way I feel the most comfortable. I'm sure there are better ways such as long term injections but I haven't been comfortable with the side effects. I think it's about finding what is right for you and your boyfriend. My boyfriend hates condoms like many guys do, but he also realizes the importance of being safe while having sex and he respects my comfort level. We are both far too young to have an unplanned pregnancy so we don't want to take gambles!

What helped me was doing the research. I compared different methods to find the ones that fit me and my lifestyle the most. So far so good! Good luck and don't stress!
