Hi everyone... I've never posted on this board before, but I'm looking for a little advice. So if you have anything, let me hear it! And thanks in advance :)

I'm 20 years old and I have Factor V Lieden and Prothrombin gene mutation... basically, I cannot put any horomones into my body... so horomonal birth control methods are out. My gyn said that the Mirena IUD would be my best option considering I am in a stable relationship. He is slightly worried about how my body will accept it though, considering I've never had a child. Anyways...

I'll be having the Mirena placed on the 17th of this month... and I'd like to hear anything users have to say about it. I'm worried about the pain during the procedure, what to expect afterward, if it can be felt during normal, everyday activities, or even during intercourse.

Anything you have to offer would be greatly appreciated! I'm hoping to calm my nerves!!

Thanks!

I have never had any kids and got Mirena about 8 months ago. I forgot to take Ibprofen before going into the doctor when I got my IUD, but the doctor gave me a local. I also had trouble getting the IUD in the first time and had to take some medication to get the opening down there larger. Insertion really wasnt that painful, but the cramps that followed where so bad I threw up. As long as you plan on taking the day off instead of going to back to work you should be fine. I went home took ibprofen and laid in bed with a heating pad for like 4 hours; after words I felt fine. I do feel the IUD every once in a while, but its not all that bad. It feels kinda like period cramps, but at random times. It usually doesn't last too long, a few minutes maybe. Often if I reposition myself the cramps will stop. On the good side I haven't had a period or any spotting since I got the IUD, which I love. Overall I would say the IUD was worth it and would reccommend it.

I'm not going to lie to you. I had very bad pain during insertion (I've had no children). But with that said, even though it was a bad bad pain - it only last a few brief moments. Following the insertion, I felt very woozy and sick to my stomach. I just stayed laying down on the table until I felt better.

But it is all worth it!!! I would go through it again - that's how much I love using the Mirena IUD.

Just plan on having a day where someone can drive you home and you can lie down and relax the rest of the day. By the next morning, I felt perfectly normal.

As for feeling the IUD, I think the week or so I was very "aware" of it. I could swear that I could feel it poking me. But I think I was just being paranoid. I quickly forgot about the fact that I even have it, and I have not "felt" it at all in the past year and a half. I'm not aware of it at all.
