Mirena side effects

My doctor recommended a Mirena IUD. I am in my mid 40's and have been on the pill for 10 years. I am finished having children and was told this was a good option for me. All I seem to hear about the Mirena are really bad side effects such as weight gain, headaches, breast tenderness, increased blood pressure, etc. I am interested in hearing what other Mirena users feel about it. Please let me know as I am scheduled for the insertion later this month.

Thanks for sharing your story. I hope that things work out for you and am so sorry to hear that Mirena failed you. Let us know how things go.

Ugh, we all forget that those failures really can happen.

I was on depo for 4 full years after I had my first child. I was on it again for another 4 years after my second child. Depo was again my method of choice after my third child. When he was 2, my doctor stopped using depo and suggested Mirena. I had it for a little over a year and a half when we decided to try for one more. I didn't have any side effects and I rather enjoyed not having a cycle.

I'm a fairly new Mirena user - had it put in March 23. So far I have had lots of spotting, but nothing too terribly annoying, some cramping, and I had some headaches for the first few weeks.

Insertion for me was a breeze - I've had two kids and took some ibuprofen beforehand, didn't feel a thing.

I like not having to think about b/c every day. I had a little scare when my doctor couldn't find the strings at my follow-up, but an ultrasound confirmed it is in place - the strings just curled up. That may or may not pose a problem when it's time to remove it, but for now I'm not going to worry about it.

HTH!

From my experience if you don't have much bleeding on the mini-pill and depo it will probally be about the same on Mirena. Best of luck.

I'm going to be one of those women that didn't have any luck with the Mirena. I have never done well with any birth control, and the Mirena was no exception. My side effects were (and some of these started up in the last year of the 3 1/2 years I had it):

Constant yeast infections
Bad vaginal dryness
Sore breasts
Acne on my face, back and neck
Extra hair growth on my face, between my breasts and other areas
Eczema in my ear canals

Given that I'd never had most of these problems prior to the Mirena, it was bloody awful to have to deal with. Now, eight months on since I had it removed, my cycle is still screwed up, and I'm off to the gyn tomorrow because I have a new issue that has cropped up that is making things even worse for my cycle!
