A really long Mirena insertion story

I am 36 and have a one year old son. I switched from depo, which I had no periods on, to Mirena Thursday, May 10. I was not having a period, but I tried to induce one by using Nuvaring for three weeks and taking it out Sunday. I took 800 mg of ibuprofen 45 minutes before my appointment. I know that some women get a shot in the cervix to numb things up, so I was disappointed to see that my dr did not have any needles out to numb me. I was fine though.
First, my dr washed my vagina and cervix with iodine. She said, “Ok, first cramp” and pushed something through the cervix. It hurt no more than a period cramp. Next, she said, “this is the big second cramp” and this is when she sounded the uterus. It hurt more but it was quick and not unbearable. Finally, she said, “this is the grand finale.” She slipped that IUD in and clipped the strings and out came the speculum. I didn’t feel the IUD going in at all.
It was a 15 minute appointment and not nearly as bad as the horror stories I read on the web. I am lucky at birth control:) I had very mild cramping for a few hours. I was fine to make dinner, clean house, do laundry, practice ball with the kids and play in a mud puddle with the toddler. I am now 17 hours post insertion and have not spotted one single drop even immediately at insertion.
TMI alert! Dh and I tried it out last night and he could not feel the strings at all. We were worried about that because his ex had a Paragard and he hated the strings. Whew! I am happy now.
The best part: I have extremely effective birth control for 5 years and only paid $15! Dh loves to save money so he is thrilled with that.
Thanks to all of the ladies who advised and encouraged me. I truly appreciate this community.
ETA: I got Mirena on Thursday and spotted for the first time today Tuesday. It was just once when I wiped though. I think there is some lining that needs to empty out before I can hopefully be period free. My libido is already improving:)

ETA: tomorrow is 4 weeks since my insertion. I spotted from 1 week post insertion until 3 weeks post insertion, for a total of 2 weeks of light spotting. I am sure that part of that was a “period”. I still do not experience cramping. It only required one panty liner per day, so not bad! DH and I are still very happy with this choice.

Hi Holly,
I'm glad to hear insertion went so well for you! That's great!
Hi Holly,
Jill
oh I'm so glad it all went well for you. I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine too. Although the spotting was annoying at first but now that it's all gone I can't complain about anything.
I didn't have anything to numb me either and I didn't think it was so bad.
Let us know how it continues to go.
I love your siggy. What a cute baby:)
