What do you recommend!

Hi girls, I am new to this board. The women in the Dec. '06 Snowflake board recommended this board. Anyhow, I have a daughter who is 5 months old who I just stopped breastfeeding. I was on a birth control pill 6 years ago (Ortho Tricycline I believe) for a short amount of time (6-8 months). During that time I gained a lot of weight. I am not completely sure that it was due to the pill, but I really think it was. Since then I would never go on a pill because I lost 35 pounds (which was a huge struggle) and didn't want anything to cause me to gain. When my husband and I got married 2 years ago we decided that we would no longer use condoms and that when we got pregnant, we got pregnant. Not that we have our little girl we would like to wait a couple years before trying again. Anyhow, I am so torn about whether to go on birth control or not. I haven't talked to my doctor, but I know he will tell me that it's not likely that I will gain on any of the contraceptives, but I don't agree. I would like your suggestions on what you guys like best and which show NO side effect of gaining weight. Thanks for all of your help!

Have you considered a non-hormonal IUD or a diaphram? Natural Family Planning is also highly effective when used properly, but takes a lot of involvement.

I can't help you with my personal experience, because I'm on the pill (Trivora), but didn't have any weight gain problems. Well...not ones I can blame on the pill. Any weight gain I've had is because I'm too lazy to cook and too fond of pizza, LOL!

I had Mirena for the entire time I was on my health & wellness journey (I weighed over 260lbs when I got it and managed to get my weight down to about 1/2 of that) - it's an IUD.

I am on Apri, and have been on it for about 4 years. I have never experienced any weight gain with it. In fact, in the past 6 weeks I've managed to lose 5 pounds with some diet and exercise. Apri is a low dose estrogen/progestin pill, and I am not sure if that would help reduce the likelihood of weight gain. I would ask your doctor about it, though. It's worked out well for me: less cramping, and my period comes EXACTLY every Monday of the placebo week. Here are some websites with information about Apri:

*wave* I'm here :D I have the Mirena and love it. I'm sure you know that already though. Ask away here and you'll get lots of info about what women like or don't like and why.

I also have the Mirena IUD and love it! It's good for five years and was cheaper than being on the pill. You can have the IUD taken out if you want to get pregnant again sooner than five years.

I haven't gained any weight because of using hormonal birth control.
