Which kind does she have? There are two kinds, The Mirena which has hormones and is good for 5 years and the Paragauard copper which has NO hormones and is good for 10 years.

Many women with the copper IUD have heavier longer periods. Most women with the Mirena have shorter lighter periods or none at all.

It's different for everyone of course.

I have the Mirena. I had it put in at my 6 week Post partum check up. I had spotting and cramping for a day or two. Then I had off and on spotting for about 6 weeks. Once that stopped I have JUST now started my first period. It's super light and I have no cramps.

There are a few users here of both kinds and I'm sure they can throw in their 2 cents.

Welcome!

I agree with PP, it depends on what kind you have. And, it doesn't matter which kind, the first few months are the worst. I've had the copper one, Paragard, since last September. I don't have cramps (last 2 babies were c-section, so don't know if that has anything to do with it, I still have ovulation pain tho, go figure, anyhow...) but I've added 2 days onto my 5 day normal. And, I used to only have to wear a pad, never had to use a tampon (hate them, so I avoid them at all costs, not any more tho...) Now, 1 or 2 days I have to use a tampon as the flow is much heavier.

All in all, I'm very satisfied with my choice. I'm 40, and for me, with 4 DDs already, I'm done. I just don't want to have anything permanent done. And, with my family history of menopause in the 40s, I'm hoping this will get me through.

Talk to your doc, and see if it's good for you. Best wishes & HTH

I have a Mirena IUD and love it! The reasons I love it: cheaper (compared to paying for the pill each month), convient (don't have to remember a pill each day), and lighter and shorter periods. The only downside was that it hurt to have it inserted, and my pre-birth control pill acne has returned. But I would have the IUD inserted again in the future!! I like it that much!

I have the Paragard copper IUD. In fact, I've had it for 10 yrs.. it comes out in a couple months and I plan on having another inserted.
I haven't had any side effects. Some women may have heavier, crampier (is that a word? LOL) periods... but I haven't had that.

The Mirena IUD releases small amounts of the hormone levonorgestrel into your uterus. It does not contain estrogen, so you can be free of estrogen-related side effects. It may also shorten, lighten or even eliminate periods.

I love my IUD!
