Plan B + trip to the gyne = problems!

On the off-chance anyone sees this and responds by tomorrow morning ... I'm posting for advice for the first time in awhile!

The condom broke late last night and we stopped immediately, but I'm no fool and I'm no longer on the Pill (as of March) because I couldn't afford it anymore. Since coming off, I have had periods like clockwork, every 29 days. My last period started 5/12 and ended 5/18. I bought Plan B, but I haven't taken it yet. Why? Because I have my yearly gyne appointment tomorrow and it takes about 6 weeks to schedule a visit to see him and I REALLY need to see him because I want to go back on the Pill (Alesse, it's back now right? I was on it before Yasmin and it was a lot cheaper). If I take Plan B, I assume it could mess up my visit, right? I mean obviously if I start bleeding it could ... but even if I don't start bleeding immediately, taking it before a gyne visit is probably a bad idea right?

What would you guys do? Take Plan B tonight and potentially screw up my gyne trip, or wait until i see him tomorrow afternoon and take it then? If I do that, it will have been not quite 48 hours when I finally do take it, which I know is well within the time range, but ... I just need a little advice.

I think I'd take it and still go to the appt.

My gyno tells me no sex for 48 hours before a pap for better results though too. I think I'd take the chance and still take the plan B. I don't THINK most women start bleeding right away on plan B. I know some ladies comment that their period is still a bit late.

You can go to the gyno even if you are having some bleeding. My gyno has even done a pap during my period, your results can be skewed though due to the blood in the sample, but not always.

You could call the office and ask them about it too, but if it were me I'd take the plan B and go to the appt and tell the doc what happened. At least you'd already be there then.

Thank you for your response! I actually didn't know gynes could do paps during periods ... I think I got a surprise period once right before an appointment when I was in between pills for a few months, and they had me go back later. That was about 5 years ago though.

I think you are right ... if I go there and he can't do the pap, he'd probably still write me a prescription for BCPs and re-schedule the exam ... at least I hope. I've been a loyal patient for quite some time, he knows I'm safe and responsible and he's quite a "progressive" doc (offered me Mirena IUD even when I was 23, was unmarried, and had no kids).

I know I cut it close on the "no sex before pap" rule, but I figured 36+ hours was good enough ... lol.

Thanks again.

I don't know if all gynos will do a pap during a period or not maybe mine is unusual. I've only had the one since I was about 16.

I think I'd go and talk to him about the plan B too. That way if your body doesn't react the way you would expect you don't freak out KWIM.

On a side note, that's great that he was going to consider the Mirena for you. I have it now and LOVE it.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Plan B works best when taken as soon as possible. If it were me, I'd take it tonight, now, immediately. If they have any problems with the pap test, they'll let you know. It's easier to schedule another appointment than it is to have an unplanned pregnancy.

Hi everyone!! Jill especially!

Thanks for all the responses. I took Plan B last night (20 hours after the "incident") and it worked out okay because my gyne had to change today's appointment to next Tuesday ... so all I have to do is hope that I am not bleeding THEN and that he can do the pap.

I have had NO side effects from Plan B! It's kind of shocking. No cramps, dizziness, nausea, headaches, nothing! My sister had all of those, AND threw up after taking it, so I wasn't optimistic, but it's gone surprisingly well; I am pretty psyched. I wonder if it has anything to do with all the years I spent on Alesse, with levonorgestrel as the progestin. I loved Alesse.

Speaking of which, it's back on the market, right?

I'm glad to be back around ... i'll try to make this a regular thing (posting ... not taking Plan B, lol!)

xoxo,

Caitlin

I didn't have any side effects from taking Plan B either--periods weren't any different, I couldn't even tell I'd taken it except for that afternoon (which could have been my brain).

If your doc uses the Thin Prep pap, and most do, you can have a pap when you're bleeding.

(((Jill))) ... (((Judie)))

Thanks guys ... i forgot how great this board was! How could I forget? Thanks for all that info, too ... that's totally interesting how ThinPrep works!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who had no side effects from Plan B ... it actually sort of weirded me out, but I'll find out in 2-ish weeks (ugh i wish I didn't have to wait so long) and will keep everyone posted!! Complicating matters was the fact that since I've been off the Pill (3 cycles), my period has actually come every 28 days like clockwork ... always on a Monday, and even almost down to the hour - freaky! But last time it came on Saturday, and barely even lasted 4 days ... so my cycles could be thrown off anyway!

If Alesse is still unavailable (which as far as I've been able to find out, it is), I will just go back to Yasmin and grab some sample packs to cut the cost. I tried Aviane (generic Alesse) and it didn't agree with me.

Thanks again everyone!!! Now we just have to hope Plan B worked as it should ... I can't get pregnant right now!! :-o
