mirena questions

Hi, I have a couple of questions about Mirena for myself and a friend.
Does it prevent fertilization or prevent implantation? (I am looking for something that does not allow fertiliation to take place.)
Is it safe to use while breastfeeding?
TIA! K

It is safe to use while breast feeding.
From our own FAQ
--How does an IUD work?
Many factors contribute to IUD efficacy. Traditionally, the IUD was believed to work mainly by preventing an embryo from implanting in the lining of the uterus. However, recent scientific evidence indicates that both types of IUD work mainly by PREVENTING fertilization , , . IUDs create a local inflammatory response inside the uterus, which creates an environment that is inhospitable to sperm. Additionally, the copper released by the copper IUD has a spermicidal effect. The progestin-releasing IUD thickens cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus.
Both types of IUD alter the lining of the uterus such that, IF fertilization were to occur, the fertilized egg would be LESS LIKELY to implant.

Hi
Jill
Hi and thanks for the information. I still feel kind of confused on how it exactly works. i've been reading a lot about it and on here, it sounds like fertilization may take place in some cases. On their website it sounds like it prevents fertilization. I don't understand...
I also have one more question. I have had a vaginal/uterine septum removed and my uterus is still somewhat heart-shaped (there is no longer a septum). Would that prevent me from using Mirena?
Thank you so much for your help. BTW, we have been using a diaphragm, but it has been causing me pain lately, so I would like a change... Mirena sounds really great. I'm just concerned about how it really works! :)
THank you!!! K
