Hi, I am just writing to vent my frustrations on information telling us how different birth control options work. I am really interested in getting Mirena, but have found so much information that argues about how it really works. upon further reading,,, birth control pills can be lumped in the same boat. (in that there is information on both sides with how it works.)
I have always felt that I am pro-life and I don't like abortion, but when i have looked for any type of contraceptive that would be pro-life, i found: "Embrace and enjoy children." !!! Ok, i do love my daughter, but I think i am done having or trying to have another baby. I need to have some kind of birth control!!!! AHHHH!!! :)
I am thinking Mirena sounds great in that I am pretty sure I want to stick with one child,,, but not positive. I want a REALLY reliable birth control. Lighter or no periods sound great! I'm just worried that i will get it and then fret about how it is actually working. How do you know what sources of information to trust?
Thanks to anyone who read this! BTW, I do have an appt in aug with my Dr. and i'm hoping she can help me figure this out. :) K

Hi again hon,
Jill
I have the Mirena and thought about that too. I think that for me KNOWING I don't want kids right now, or possibly ever out weighed the maybes of it. My Dh is on medication that causes birth defects and that was a much scarier idea then the maybes.
I KNOW that the Mirena works in more then one way. I choose to think it works by not allowing the sperm to get to the egg, or that I don't always ovulate. That way I don't have to worry about it.
Unless you are willing to do something permanent then there may always be a possibility of something happening. Even on no BC you could have fertilization and your body could reject it, it happens naturally for numerous reasons.
I hope that your doctor can answer the questions you have for you. Vent any time :D
"Even on no BC you could have fertilization and your body could reject it, it happens naturally for numerous reasons. "
That is so true. i have had two miscarriages in which we saw the heartbeats and were really attached. I really don't want to face the possibility of going through that again. If I am on a bc that might have a fraction of a chance of having fertiliation and an implatation rejection, it would not be preferable, and I wouldn't choose that, but like you said, if i am on nothing and get pregnant the same thing is likely to happen (in my case). If I were to try to get pregnant again my doctor wants me to use medications twice a day to try and keep the baby there, so my body wouldn't reject it. It just seems too risky. I think my sanity would be in jeopardy! :P
And I am really starting to feel comfortable with my one and only little girl! :) I love her like crazy, but don't really want to start all over, put her (and my family) through a rough or unsuccessful pregnancy, spread my limited patience even more...:) I am giving our family a chance to be happy the way we are.
Mel, when you were deciding if you wanted to try Mirena, did you find a lot of conflicting information too?
Thanks again to both of you for your help. Kelly

I did find some conflicting info. I decided two things, I was going to believe my doctor. She was wonderful when I was pregnant and I trust her and her response about how it worked. And two, that no one writes on the internet when NOTHING happens. Of course you hear all the horror stories. No one writes...and nothing happened.
My doc explained Mirena the same way Jill did. I was told that fertilization of an egg is VERY unlikely and that those women who actually have fertilization are pregnant like any other pregnant woman. It's just that Mirena is more then 99% effective so there aren't many of those to tell their stories about having successful pregnancies I guess.
I do know one woman that got pregnant with an IUD, the copper one, and she has a beautiful 8 month old now :D She's also made her DH have a the big V :p
I don't blame you for wanting a very reliable bc when your husband is on medications. That would be a scary time to have a surprise pregnancy. My Grandma has MS too. She has had it for 30+ years and has done so much better than anyone expected. I hope things go well for your family.
Thanks again! Kelly
This was an issue for me. I'm a practicing Catholic and as you may know, Catholics do not believe in birth control of any kind - but there was no way I could get pregnant. I read up on the Mirena and my doctor explained how the progesterin causes an increase in cervical mucus. This prevents the sperm from being able to even get to the egg. I felt okay with this.
I've enjoyed having the Mirena.
I am really coming around to the idea of Mirena and it helps to hear how people who use it, feel about it and how you have decided it is a good choice. Thanks! K
