IUD making me crazy?

OK, so when I was on Nordette and taking Depo I was like crazy. Unstable, very emotional, etc. I have the Mirena IUD, and I was wondering if it is the progestrone that is making me so crazy? I believe all 3 have the same progestrone. When I was on a POP with a different progestrone i wasn't nearly so emotional. Now I just want to cry at random moments for no reason, and I am irrational. My fiance keeps asking me if the IUD is causing whatever it is at the moment, which only angers me more. I am afraid I am going to push him away if I don't get rid of some of the craziness. I go off for no reason at all, and I am starting to get paranoid about things. It makes perfect sense at the time, but looking back i just think i am crazy. Like i totally accused him of being suspicious and cheating on me when in reality he is not. Like him going to the gym and golfing after work has me convinced he is with another girl. He actually stole the towel he used at the gym for evidence that he really was there, and called me from the phones there.
I was afraid to tell the doctor who inserted it on my check up because i didn't really know him that well, and when i was seeing my own doctor i just forgot at the moment because things had been good at the moment, but then the next day the craziness started up again way worse. I don't want to have the IUD removed since it really has helped with my periods, and as unbelievable as it sounds, I am not as depressed during my period. I still have some Sarafem that I was supposed to be taking a week before my period, but i forgot to take it since my cycle has been changing from the IUD. I asked the first month or so if I should still take it, and both doctors said I could take it as needed if I kept forgetting. Should I just take that when I am feeling down, or just tough it out? I am kind of in between insurance right now, so the doctor really isn't an option until Julyish or August.

Hi,
I am sorry to just jump in here as I know one of the CLs will post to you and give you excelent advise. I just could not help wondering when I read your post if you don't have PMDD Premenstrual dysphoric disorder? If you do then the hormone in the IUD might make you feel worse as would the other BC methods you mentioned.
The Sarafem works really well for many women if taken 10 to 15 days before the onset of menses. Also there is a BCP called Yaz that is FDA approved for the treatment of PMDD at www.yaz-us.com if you want to learn more about it. Also IVillage has a PMS/PMDD board.
I have very severe PMDD and I have exactly the symptoms you describe.
Let me know what you think,
Marcella
I really do think it causes some weird emotions... I had mine in for two months and I was insane. Literally, I yelled, I cried, and I wanted to sleep constantly. I completely lost my sex drive as well. I really do think I was depressed for a little bit. I actually had the Mirena out earlier this week because it was causing so much pain down there... and within two days, I'm completely back to normal. My fiance said I did a total 180.
So yes, I do think it causes you to feel different and irrational. It could have just been because I was in so much pain I was mad at everyone, but something just felt weird, I didn't feel like myself.
If it's too much to deal with, tell your gyn. I bet he/she can help. Good luck!
I have had the Mirena since Feb and I love it. I have had LESS PMS then ever before. The progesterone is slightly different then in the Depo since it's not systemic.
I would speak to your gyno about the problem, that is not normal and I agree with the PP about asking about PMDD.
Try calling your doctor anyways. They inserted it for you and should be able to answer your questions over the phone or via email.
"In the Mirena, however, a much lower dose is released than when you take the Pill (about 1/7th strength), and it goes directly to the lining of the womb, rather than through the blood stream where it may lead to the common progesterone-type side effects.
Hormonal Problems: Although the IUS delivers its hormone directly to the lining of the womb, it does lead to a slight increase in progesterone levels in the blood stream. The levels are much lower than that found with the progestagen-only pill (POP) and usually don't lead to side effects. If they do occur, most often they are mild and only last up to 4-6 weeks. Side effects have included headache, water retention, breast tenderness or acne. "

HUGS! Hope you get some help soon.
Hi,
I remember you now! I'm sorry the IUD seems to be making you feel bad. You have not had children, right? But they gave you the IUD because of severe PMDD and the estrogen gives you migraines. I think that is what I remember from your last post on PMDD. Sorry I did not recognize you (LOL) I am better with faces!
It's funny, I was told that my migraines were most likely caused by the progesterone in Yaz as it is higher than the estrogen. There is such a small amount of estrogen in Yaz none of my doctors thought it could trigger a migraine. You know it is the peaks and valleys that are the problem so even when someone like you or I are on a very ow dose BCP we still experience the ups and downs. I can no longer take any form of hormone because of my migraines.
I also have had very bad experiences with IUDs, but it was related to the fact that my uterus is still very small because I have never given birth. It's something to think about.
I wish you the best and I hope you feel better. Maybe try the Sarafem? For sure I agree you should talk to your doctor.
Marcella
They -say- that the progestin in Mirena (levonorgestrel) isn't systemic, but we've heard from a fair number of women that they do feel some effects from it.
Thanks everyone for the suggstions. i will just have to see my doctor. Paraguard was never an option because my period before Mirena were unbearble and super heavy. I would not risk any chance of it getting heavier or more painful. Before Mirena, I was in bed for days from the pain and fatigue, but since having it inserted, I havn't had those problems. It has been very uneventful. An occasional cramp that lasts maybe a minute. I love it.. just not the emotional side to it. I havn't been keeping up with the sarafem because my cycle has become unpredictable, but I am going to give it a couple more months... with a visit to my doctor of course to try and get the mood problems gone. The sarafem worked somewhat when i remembered to take it a week before my period, but it doesn't work as well when I take it when I get crazy and remember.
thanks again
It's normal to have spotting off and on for 6weeks to 6 months. Sometimes it can be heavier like a period or even not there at all.
I spotting pretty continuously for 6 weeks.
