Constant periods
11
Sun, 07-01-2007 - 12:52pm

For probably the last 4 years I have had long very frequent periods. I have seen loads of doctors at both the family planning clinic and at my doctors surgery.

I have recently been put onto the combined pill (I had been on the mini pill for years), the first one of which made the situation worse and it looks like this one is just as bad. I went on holiday on 11th June - I was there 2 hours before I got my period (I wasn't due to finish my pack of pills untill 13th June so should expect a period by 15th). I still have my period nearly three weeks later. It varies in flow and colour (never very heavy).

The worst thing is that my partner of 3 years and I have not had a weekend away or a holiday with out me getting my period. It seems to be linked with me looking forward or getting excited about something! When this one does eventually finish it may only be a few days before I get another one. I am sick and tired of it now.
It gets me so down. My partner is so good and patient. What worries me is that I'm 36 and we would like to try for a family next year - will I ever be able to conceive, will I ever be able to sort this out. I am so worried.

I have had numerous pap/smear test and an ultrasound and everything inside looks healthy, so I am concinced it is hormonal. I hate it and would like to et it sorted out by the end of the summer as I we are getting married abroad in september. Please help.
Thank you
Ani

Thank you for your positive reply. i was all for giving up when I finished this packet of pills but I think I will stick with it till the next packet is up. So can I just ask, the fact that I have been like this for 4 years or so does that mean it can ever get sorted. I am not holding my breath for this pill to sort it out as I have been down this road so many years before.
What would happen if I came off the pill altogether, would that fix it? My theory is that I can be on the pill, have constant periods and no sex or i could be off the pill and not have sex whether or not the periods have sorted themselves out).
Is there any vitamins or supplements I could take to help my situation - I tried evening primrose for a year or so but I can't say it helped.
Thanks again

Thank you so much for you help.

To be honest I have been on BCP for so long I can't really remember what they were like before - all I know is that they weren't like this. By cycles do you mean packet of pills because having a constant period means I only seem to have 1 long cycle as I have been bleeding for this since before I started this last pack with only 3 pills left to take before I have a break.

I take B vits already but still get pretty moody (well quiet and downn feeling).
Changing the subject slightly... when I eventually come off the pill is a Vit B complex sufficient enough folic acid supplement to prepare for pregnancy?

Hi there,

Just so you don't feel alone, I had constant periods when I was on the mini pill, and also on Depo Provera. Since going off any hormonal birth control, my cycles are slowly returning to normal (by that I mean I get my period at regular intervals, but my progesterone levels are still screwed up).

Thank you so much for your kind words. I have come across a few people like me so it is nice to know that someone can symathise. Do you mind me asking how long it took for you to reach some sort of normality? How do you know your progesterone levels are still screwed up? I am currently on the combined pill but have now been bleeeding for a solid 3 1/2 weeks so I am off to the Dr's in a few mins.
Thanks Again

I chart my cycles for contraceptive purposes, and the way my charts have been looking (particularly this past one) show that my progesterone levels could very well be on the low side. And the fact my periods are soooo light, indicates my hormones aren't building up my lining properly (I used to have a couple of heavy-ish days, followed by three normal ones, and then 2-3 days of spotting. Now I have light bleeding for 1-2 days and then a couple of days of spotting). But I can't get my gyn to take my issues seriously. According to her, unless I'm trying to conceive, there isn't an issue *eye roll*.

Well I have just been to the doctors and she has taken me off the pill so I will have to do the same as you and chart my periods. I am a bit clueless when it comes knowing what hormones do what but I am looking forward to being artficial hormone free. Fingers crossed I might be on the road to some sort of normality.
Thanks for your help
