Patch or pill?

For the last six months, I've been sexually active and my boyfriend of several years has used a condom and spermicide without him ejaculating inside me. I never wanted to go on the birth control pill because of the horrible effects I've heard that people have had. I went to the doctor hoping to get an IUD or a diaphragm, but was told that these two options were not really recommended because I'm only 24 and he claimed that the diaphragm was equivalent to the spermicide. I'm currently on thyroid medication to treat my hypo and I'm quite forgetful with pills. I informed the doctor about this and he recommended the patch. Once I got home, I did a little research about the Ortho-Evra patch and read that it contains 60% more estrogen that the actual birth control pill! This is something he failed to mention (although he did mention an increase risk of clots...which worried me at the time).
I'm quite confused as to what to do now. I feel that I would have been better off to go with the Birth control pill (like a tri-cyclen lo) and just bought a pill box rather than have to take an 60% increase amount of estrogen.
Does anyone have any experience with the patch and found that the pill was better? Also, if I call the doctor's office up tomorrow won't I look like a complete moron getting him to change the prescription?

Hi

I'm surprised that your doctor didn't mention Nuvaring--that's what my doctor offers to all of his patients before the pill.
