Mirena

I had the Mirena for 6 months and did not like it. I spotted everyday. I was moody and had alot of headaches. I think ob/gyns push the Mirena because they have pressure from the sales reps. I have a Paraguard (I had to practically beg for it) and I have no complaints. No spotting. No pregnacy. If you are interested in a hormone free, pill free method ask your ob/gyn. Just my 2 cents. Birdie. BTW, I do have friends with the Mirena and love it. I just wanted to let others know that there IS an alternative.

I am having side effects with Mirena, like weight gain, constant bloating and some mood swings. Do you have any of these with the copper IUD?

Thanks!

I could feel myself start to even out when I got the Mirena taken out. No mood swings. No bloating. No spotting. Period is manageable. I'm glad I gave it a chance...even though my ob/gyn tried to discourage me. Birdie.

I had a copper IUD a few years back, and just recently had a Mirena IUD. Neither worked for me, for different reasons.

The copper IUD didn't work b/c I just kept having my period. My doctor would tell me to wait and wait, that I would finally stop bleeding but after five months of bleeding I had him take it out.

I most recently was on the Mirena. Had it put in around 2 months after my daughter was born. I have a history of not reacting well to hormonal BC so was very wary of this, but my doctor said to give it a try because it had such a low dose of hormones. Well, needless to say, it didn't work out. I am dealing with postpartum depression, but the hormones from the Mirena made it worse. Plus, while I didn't have my period for three months, when it did come it was for almost a month. That was the final straw, and I had my doctor take it out.

BC pills don't work (hormones). Depo doesn't work (hormones). Have used a diaphram without problems for me but my husband didn't like it, the spermicide irritated him and he rubbed against the diaphram and that irritated him further. So we're back to condoms until we're done having kids and then HE gets the snip. :)

I've had the Paragard for 10 yrs and love it. In fact, I plan on getting another one inserted.

I have decided to have the Mirena removed and the Paragard inserted. I am so tired of carrying this extra weight, and I feel like the Mirena is the reason it's hanging on. My doctor keeps saying that weight gain is not a side effect, but I really don't think Mirena has been around long enough for doctors to know all of the possible side effects.

I think the weight gain could be your reaction to the hormones, and since not everybody reacts the same way to the hormones it's not a listed side effect. I had problems with major cramping when I was on my period (remember, the three+ week period) and never had problems like that before the Mirena. I only go to doctors who will listen to me and respect my opinion. After all, you know your own body best, not them.

Yep, I had cramps too, and hadn't had them since was a teenager. Hopefully the Paragard will be a better fit for me. In my adult life, I've been happiest when off of pill/hormones.

I was told weight gain wasn't a side effect with Depo. Yeah right!!!! Depo was fairly new when I first used it... never again. While convienant and all that, I can't recommend it.
Good luck with the Paraguard. I've loved mine... and am having a new one inserted.
Take care

Good Luck with the paraguard. I had mine for three years, I didn't respond well to hormones, but I did have a light and easy period. My three years with the paraguard gave me really bad cramps, which were managed IF I took Ibprofin at the first sign of discomfort otherwise I had bad periods. I just had it removed because we are going to start a family (hopefully). Overall it was a good choice for me and I would do it again.
Just be prepared for a few months of bad periods until your body adjusts and you know the new routine.
Hope everything works out.
