sex in shower w/o protection?

Hey, I'm Saphirka and I'm new here - I had a question I was wondering about for a while. My boyfriend and I were debating this. He says that having sex for a short time in the shower is safe, since the water washes any possible sperm away (such as the pre-ejaculate before finishing), but I am still rather paranoid, considering that I am not currently taking any oral contraception or back up protection besides using condoms.

So far the sex we have had in the shower was without protection for a few seconds and then using a condom, because we did not want to risk anything (which I know probably sounds ironic considering that we did anything at all without protection).

So what I would like to know is, even if he pulls out before he is ready to finish, can we safely have sex in the shower without any condoms/protection, or would we be taking too large of a risk, considering that I'm only 21 and I am not expecting children yet? I ask this because I know how the soaps and shampoo and water and such can erode the latex or get inside the condom and cause it to slip off. This probably seems like a stupid question if not a bit irresponsible-sounding, but I figure it's better to ask and find out from some possible experts than to risk anything more.

Thanks a lot!

No question about birth control is a silly one. It's an important subject.

Now for the question...having sex for any amount of time in the shower or not doesn't make it safe and protection is still needed.

Have you considered going on the pill or other form of birth control yourself? If you're in a committed monogamous relationship it might be something to consider so that you don't have to worry about the condom in the shower.

I'm sure Jill will have lots more information she's awesome!

Hi again,

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not currently on any pills at the moment, mainly because I'm not sure if I can afford pills each month (I'm a college student and my money is limited), and if due to that, I would have to not have pills for a month, I don't want to suddenly be fertile again, so to speak. Another thing is that I'm reluctant after hearing about the side effects like weight gain or other such problems, or wondering if I would be able to remember the pills everyday and not miss too many and end up wasting my time and money. I know there are patches and shots but I don't know if I trust those methods, or even birth control pills that much in general. I know the rate of pregnancy is pretty low when taking the pill correctly, but would I actually be safe to not use a condom as protection if I were on the pill? I guess I'm just wondering if it would be worth the trouble for effectiveness and such.

For the record, my BF and I have discussed our sexual history and are both clean and have been tested negatively for anything.

ok, well I probably won't get to see him until around October, since he lives around Chicago and I'm in Ohio, but when I see him, if anything happens, I will keep you posted!

Thanks for the help.

Well, there's serious weight gain with pregnancy... so you may want to consider that.

I know planned parenthood offers some discounts as far as birth control goes - and i've wanted to get on the pill as long as it's safe and effective and won't cause any severe side effects, but last time i called them they said it might not be completely free anymore. i guess it depends too on all my college financial aid. i know that played a part in it, because i went there before to get checked out and it didn't cost me anything then but i donated like $20 to them since I think it's a great service and that was the least I could do.So as long as it's within my budget and all, and worth it as far as effectiveness and such, I'm all for it !! :)

you have a point about the baby...definitely more weight gain haha. in that case I can try to call them up at PP or pay them a visit and see what they recommend for me, fitting with my budget and needs and such.

thanks again.

by the way, i forgot to ask,
how long would it typically take for me to be on the pill before it would start to be effective? just so i'd know how long i'd have to wait before not needing to use a backup method (although that's often recommended anyway).

I've been told anything from right away to a month. i figure this probably also depends on what kind of pill it is and such.

Most of the time we recommend that you use a back up for a month so that you're sure you've learned to take the pills correctly and don't freak out if your first pill period is a little different then the ones before (and sometimes it is).

ok, so pretty much after this one-month "getting used to things" point, i should be okay to engage in intercourse without necessarily requiring a back up method of contraception?
