What do you think possesses people to beg for prayers? Suddenly out of nowhere one of my favorite message boards has been taken over by people making posts saying, 'prayer request,' 'prayers needed,' 'need prayers,' etc...

The message board has nothing to do with religion, God, politics or anything related to those subjects. It is a website devoted to a hobby of mine.

I am not going to be happy if one of my favorite communities turns religious. :(

I find it hard because one of my hobbies is big in certain religious circles (scrapbooking).

The prayer request are annoying on the listserves that I am on for Trivia and Adoption, but I really hate it when they start posting things like non-Christians are unethical or we are responsible for 9/11 and the downfall of America and every other nonsensical lie you can imagine, and when I respond the God Squad descends with all kinds of straw man arguments.

One of my favorite was the argument that the Spanish Inquisition was run by atheists by someone who does not consider Catholics to be Christian, so therefore Catholics were atheists.

That sounds like email forwards I get! Seriously, do they have any idea on earth how stupid it makes them sound when they say or spread stuff like this? It absolutely blows my mind.

I occasionally get email forwards making similar claims from Christian members of my family. I hate to say it, but I am deeply ashamed to be related to them when they spread things that stupid/ignorant.

I remember one said all practicing homosexuals were atheists because no Christian could ever be in a same-sex relationship. I was like, "WTF? So they can believe Jesus died on the cross for their sins, but they can't sin or else they aren't a Christian?"

I would have never known to be Christians are coming out of the wood work! It's like they are taunting me with their prayer requests!

They are taunting you. I deal with this in real life at work. I have had people 'trap' me in their office just so they can give witness to the great deeds of their lord and savior Jesus Christ.

It's just so creepy to me to see people that I grew up with boasting all this Jesus stuff.

I'm supposed to carpool to a party with one of these religious nuts and the party is an hour away, I declined because I did not want to be trapped in a car with her. It is terrible, and I am just assuming that she would pour this stuff on me, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

You are probably right. A few years ago I had a flat tire and I had to ask a coworker for a ride home. The entire way there I was bombarded with reasons I should go to church. I have social issues and it made me incredibly uncomfortable to be trapped like that. lol it reminded me of when I was 14 and mom trapped me in the car to give me the sex talk.

Anyhow. Last Monday my car got a flat again. I couldn't bare to ask anyone for a ride since last time I was trapped in that situation. We don't have cabs in this town so instead of risking putting myself in that uncomfortable social situation, I ran all the way home (8 miles) and biked to work the next day. I'm a long distance runner, but if I wasn't, I would have walked home.

Being trapped with religious people makes me feel incredibly uncomfortable. I wish they would take our feelings into consideration before they start proselytizing.

I try to read "pray for me" as "I need to share a burden with you." Of course, that may or may not make it more palatable, depending on the relationship you have with that person. They will try to claim junk about the "power of prayer" or whatever, but ultimately I think they really just have something weighing on their mind and they want to get it off their chest. That's a feeling I can relate to.

I try not to let it bother me unless they go overboard with it. Sometimes, if you respond with something like "you'll be in my thoughts" or whatever, they get all offended because you didn't use the word "pray." Those people aren't worth my time. If they can accept the pleasantries I can offer them, I overlook the religion.

It does get annoying when a favorite board gets over run with off topic overbearing posters.
