Birth Control and Depression

Hey guys. I am new to the board. I am 20 years old and a college student. I started having problems with depression and feeling bad when I was about 11-- it lasted for about a year and went away around the time I started my first period. Off and on since then I've had problems but they have come and gone. When I was 17, I took birth control pills for about a year and became SEVERELY depressed. Even though I tried 4 different kinds, nothing helped until I got off them completely. Some of my friends now take the Pill and think I"m nuts for having such horrible side effects. I still have some problems and take Sarafem 20 mg. I wondered if anyone else had had these problems? THe pill made me totally non-functional and it is hard to deal with those kind of feelings, you know?

When I was inneed of a birthcontrol device I turned to the IUD. Its a non medicating just as accurate for birthcontrol as the pill.
Ask your doctor about it...there is no med's or hormones in it!
Try and stay away from anything that will trigger your depression.
Take care
Welcome to the board!!

I too have had a hard time with the pill to the point where I just couldnt take anything like that at all so I didnt.
I found out that I already produce alot of estrogen I guess to much for me to be on the pill since it contains both estrogen and progestin so I spoke with my obgyn cause I knew I had to g o on something we talked about the shot that you get every three months that has no estrogen in it but with the bad side effects that I got with birth control in the past he didnt want me to take that cause once you get injected it is in your blood weather you like it or not side effects and all so he told me about this pill that you have to no if ands or buts about it take it at the exact time everyday if you are more than three hours late taking this pill than it is considered a missed dose it is called nor-qd and so far so good no side effects nothing but it doesnt contain estrogen so I think that is why and it also takes away your period in some people and I am hoping that I am that some person.
I would talk with your doc see what he says ask him about the nor-qd I like it I have not gained weight gotten depressed or any of those things look into it
It cant hurt any.
well I hope that I was of some help even if it is just a little bit.

when i first started taking the pill about 8 months ago, i was pretty blue for about 2 weeks, but then it went away. unfortunately that blue feeling came back a couple of months later and stayed, for about 4 months now. my pill went bazurks with the antidepressant i'm taking. (horrible cramps, irregular periods, etc) so i stoped taking the pill, but my depression is still getting worse. the two must be related. this might sound silly, but a month after getting off the pill, i'm still hoping that the hormones are mostly behind my depression, still waiting to start feeling better.
