I want to encourage my niece to keeping reading for the summer.

How could I forget L.M. Montgomery? There's also the Emily of New Moon series, Pat of Silverbush, the short stories that make up The Chronicles (and Further Chronicles) of Avonlea, Magic for Marigold, Jane of Lantern Hill... I also have some short story collections by subject, like Akin to Anne (about orphans), one of ghost stories, etc.
(For the adults, there's Kilmeny of the Orchard and Blue Castle. I think Kilmeny is probably suitable for a younger age, but I usually think of Blue Castle as grown-up because it's more philosophical and serious.)

The "Warriors" series by Erin Hunter. They are so good, my 12 year old son and I both love them.
Some people are letting their kids read the "Twilight" series at her age, it just depends on how mature she is.
Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) has a lot of other books that are very good, also.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
