This poll expired before I could vote, but here's my opinion.
I'm not going to see the movie, because watching two hours of someone being tortured is not something I can do.

I've lost respect for Mel Gibson!
I did see it, tonight as a matter of fact.

Is it the true story of Jesus? I think that is a difficult question. The Catholic Church was corrupt for centuries. They frequently changed the bible to fit their own agenda. The bible as it currently reads is not a reflection of what it originally said. I've read some gospels that were found in the archives of the Vatican and translated by a renound linguist in the 1940s. There are some key messages left out of the bible. I'm not doubting that Jesus died in a brutal way, however.
I have more respect for Gibson for making this film. He exhaustively researched the details of Jesus's death for more than 14 years. He traveled around the world to get as much information as he could from the top biblical scholars. Christianity has brought meaning and purpose to his life. He's devout and fundamentalist in his Catholicism. I don't agree with his beliefs, but I respect that he lives them as strongly as he can.
He made the movie to show the truth as he has researched it to be. He wants people to see the true sacrifice that Christ made for them. I may not agree with his religion, but I absolutely get the power of his message and his passion to bring it to the public.
The violence is typical of an R-rated movie. The intent was to make it seem realistic, so in that way, it was worse than, say, an action-flick where the violence is blowing things up and lots of explosions that don't seem real or painful. In this movie, they show close-ups of Christ after the whipping, it is extremely gruesome. The problem is, after awhile, you become inured to it, there is simply too much.
I consider myself to be a devout, born-again Christian. I received my personal testimony of the Savior through prayer, and study of the scriptures. I know He is the Redeemer, because the Holy Spirit spoke peace to my heart. I do not believe that going to see a graphic movie portrayal of the crucifixion did anything to deepen my testimony of the Lord. I do not believe that this movie will increase anyone's understanding of the atonement. Therefore, that leaves only the violence, and it is not worth it. I personally do not recommend this movie.
