Which antidepressant to take???

Hi,

I was on prozac for a few years when it seemed to be losing it's "magic". I was then given a combo of prozac(40mg) and wellbutrin(100mg). I was eventually given more wellbutrin (100mg 2x day) but mostly forgot to take the second 100mg. I was hoping to get away from the adverse side effects that prozac has on my sex drive (sex? what's that? yes it's been that bad and i'm married). So, last month I went on a once a day 300 mg wellbutrin and it was a living nightmare. I became very depressed, weepy, hostile and just totally out of sorts. I have two young children and a husband who travels overseas alot. Not a pretty picture.

I've noticed a lot of the women responding to these boards/ or messages (i'm new to this) seem to be on zoloft. Can any of you share your antidepressant experiences. What's worked best over the long haul? Anything you've taken have a less dampening effect on the libido? Anyone tried tapering off meds and going with cognitive therapy.

I'm really at a cross roads here and would appreciate your input. I go back to my doctor in August. Until then, I'm so freaked out by the wellbutrin that I'm taking a drug break.

thank you for any input.

Kathleen, I want to caution you about taking a "drug break".

I agree with Barb, be wary of trying to go without. Withdrawl from meds whether they are working or not can be very bad. Ask you doc if she/he might try a different SSRI (other than Prozac) in combination with Wellbutrin. It seems to me the combination was working better than he thought. Maybe a different one will have less sexual side effects.

I know that a lot of the research has shown that combination of meds sometimes works best for people. Especially if a med's effectiveness has lessened.

Good luck.

Sending hugs and good thoughts your way.

Take care,

Lisa-)

Barb and Lisa are right..DO NOT just stop taking your meds without first speaking with your doctor about it first the side effects could be horrible.....

When I went off lamictal I went off really slowly and yet still the effects were bad I became manic almot over night and then I had to wait two weeks before I could take anything else those were the worst days of my life it felt like I went back to before I went on meds...so speak with your doctor first see what he/she has to say and what they can do to make things bettr for you...

I know how hard it can be when te meds that are supposed to help you make you feel so bad and afraid I know some people on the board have had great success with welburtine but what works for some doesnt work for others...

Speak with your doctor and please let us know how you are doing.

Take care of yourself.

Hi Kathleen,

In addition to the help you're receiving on this board, possibly our Anti-Depressant Med board might have some ideas for you regarding the various med options:

We also have a drug database if you'd like to look up a specific med:

OH MY GOSH! I am so where you are right now. Although it's Sarafem and Wellbutrin (same as prozac). The sexual side effects are awful and the wellbutrin just sent my head spinning! Please let me know what you find out! I did wean myself off very slowly, but going thru a real bad time right now, so I went back on the Sarafem. I don't go back to my doc till August either, but think I'm going to call and get in sooner. Can't keep going on like this.

Keep me updated!

Chris

I tried Zoloft it was 50 Mgs but I stopped because I thought I was going to have a heart attack and pain in my right and left shoulder it was scary for me and tried prozac and it gave me nightnares of death so I stopped, well I tried (paxcil) sorry for mispell I was on for 2 years it stopped its magic also.

Well now I am on wellbutrin 300 mgs a day and effexor 225 mgs but it still feels the same to me but it takes off the edge for me which is good but I feel hopeless like is it going to help me or just poop me out?

I have a 7 month old and need to be well to take care of him, daddy works and I stay at home, I know if I hadn't been on meds I would of had REALLY bad post-pardom blues bad!!

Well sex drive is hard one I notice at first with the meds it takes away alot but wellbutrin is suppose to be good for this with little side effects so maybe this is the one. I need cognitive therapy myself can't seem to find it and due to no money also.

Hi, Cherimoyas!

The cost of therapy is an issue for a number of people on our board.
