Bipolar - employment or disability?

I've been on meds for 10 years and I thought I was doing okay, but recently I realized that I have been lucky enough to work for casual companies in which my supervisor was a family member or family friend or just an easy-going person who didn't mind if I came in a few minutes late, or took different times for lunch every day, or vented a little about my personal troubles. Six months of working for a staffing agency with strict rules, and I can't use them as a reference anymore because they're scaring away prospective employers that don't know me and care desperately about having a stable person on staff. And I can't not use them as a reference because it makes prospective employers wonder what I'm hiding.
It has been recently suggested to me that I ought to file for medical Social Security disability. Has anyone done this before? Up until recently, I didn't think being bipolar was a legitimate reason to claim disability benefits, but I'm beginning to change my mind. Or maybe I'm just feeling lousy because my bills are going unpaid, and my unemployment was denied, and the appeals hearing was today, and the representative for my former employer expressed strong doubts as to whether I could actually hold down a full-time job. I thought I was fine, with sick days and a casual environment, but I'm not so sure any more...
I don't want to lose my home before I figure something out. Any advice would be appreciated.

How are they scaring away prospective employers?
