I am not sure if this is the message board that I need to be at. Sorry if this does not belong here.
I am not sure that I am depressed but My problem is that my nerves are very bad. I can be very hard to live with. I tend to yell at the kids a lot. When I am on med. it gets a lot better. However with no drug insurance and no extra money to pay for the meds I don't get to be on them that much.
Does anyone know of anything natural over the counter stuff that I might can try?
Thanks

Ps...I do not qualify for an assistance program

Some people find that St. John's Wart works for them. It is a natural herb that you can get at any drug store that is supposed to support a positive mood. It comes in a pill form that is pretty cheap, you can get the genaric store brand and it will work just as well as the name-brands. I take it sometimes and I think it helps a little, but I don't take it regularly enough to really notice a difference, although I should start doing that. Read up on it first though on the internet, because I read somewhere that it can interfere with the birth control pill (if you're on it). I'm not sure if thats true or not but I remember reading it somewhere.
Some other natural approaches are meditation and yoga, which are supposed to help with nerves. I have a good book about anxiety and depression that I bought at Borders recently called "Anxiety and Depression: A Natural Approach" by Shirley Trickett. It has a lot of helpfull information on different types of anxiety and depression. It also has information about natural approaches like breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, diet techniques and things like that. I recommed reading it, it sounds like just what you need.
Well goodluck and I hope you find something that helps you
:)
St. John's wort is for very mild depression. It hasn't been shown to work with major depression.
The herb SAMe is more for major depression. My cousin had great success with it.
The most effective treatment for depression of anything is aerobic exercise. It relieves stress and gives you endorphins that are more powerful than any antidepressant. It's natural and free! Just take a fast walk or slow jog for 20 minutes a day.
Hot baths, deep breathing, and starting your day with a few minutes of meditation are all really helpful. If you have never meditated, you can start by sitting up in a chair, closing your eyes and imagining the sun beaming down on your and filling you with love and peace. This is a relaxing way to meditate that doesn't require all that frustrating, still your mind training that can cause more stress at the beginning.
Finally, there is an antidepressant that works as well as Prozac, but only costs about $10 a month. It a Tricyclic type. You can get a prescription for it. The reason that doctors don't tend to prescribe it is that, unlike SSRIs like Prozac and Paxil, it is toxic in large doses. Since depressed people are often suicidal, doctors don't like to give them something they can take in large doses to kill themselves. However, since you depression is more irritation related, your doctor might be open to prescribing it. It is so cheap! Many doctors will only let you get a week's worth at a time, so you have to get refills every week. You can try those. They should work as well as the other antidepressants. There is some risk of heart problems with this, but it's minor. Your doctor can give you an EKG every six months to make sure your heart is OK.
Good luck,
