I recently found out that my teenage daughter has "cut" herself on more than one occasion. I'm terribly scared for her mental health. There isn't alot of online information available. She's a very bright, vivacious, beautiful girl. Can someone please give me guidance?

Do you have insurance?

I agree with the checking with the insurance company. Also, see if you can get your daughter to talk about it - at leat a little to get some idea of how urgently she should be seen. And also, to let her know that you want her to see someone (meaning a therapist) about it. Surprises usually don't work well with teens and ruin the trust issue.

See if you can find a therapist that deals with kids and adolescents - they are MUCH more in tune with adolescent behavior than the adult ones. I know that is a generalization, and there are probably some very good adult therapists who work successfully with teens, but that's been my expeience.

The other replies to your questions are super! I hope you've made a call by now. If the situation was not critical at that point and you still haven't made a call, there are also hotline numbers in most phone books now. I agree your insurance company would be a great starting point. But not everyone has insurance. Or just under Mental Health in the book could get some info. Critical to your situation is to assess your daughter's diet. A body that is fed only junk and processed food cannot build and maintain the normal chemical impulses that fire the mental, emotional and nervous systems of the body. An excellent web site for you to check out would be mercola.com and also the Weston Price Foundation web site. Both sites offer extensive nutrition info that is superior to much of what is commonly available. Dr. Mercola also has links to help you find superior therapists who practice a technique called Emotional Freedom Technique that is superior to many therapies out there. I know for a fact how vital proper nutrition and appropriate supplements are for one to overcome emotional and mental illness. I have overcome depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts by these means. (as well as healthy attention to my spiritual need.) Each time I make a positive change in my diet(as well as my family's) we improve. My nephew asked about my uncommon approach to nutrition and I stated plainly it's because it really works. Other family members that follow the same uncommon approach are healthy as they age. Other family members who eat all the junk, crude and glop that is common fare are sick, depressed and are not even old yet!! My family is healthy , slim, active and takes NO MEDICATIONS!! Most of our friends our age(mid 40's) are inactive, sick, depressed and take prescriptions while eating mostly junk and processed stuff. As they say, 'the proof is in the pudding.' Our superior health proves that the info I've put in to use from Dr. Mercola, Dr. Jordan Rubin and from the Weston Price Foundation really does work the best. Best wishes!! (PS Yes, I have shared this info with them on how we stay healthy, but they think I am a fanatic. I guess they preferr to keep doing things 'the way they've alway done it', even though for some of them their dpression, etc has only deepened over the years as I've overcome mine.)
