how to help a teen with depression

I have a 16 year old boy who is depressed and I am in need of advice. He has missed a month of school. He just went for his first visit with a psychiatrist and was put on effexor. However the kid does not want to take the medication. He has been having a lot of nausea and the pills make it worse. Does anyone have any experience with their own teen and depression. I FEEL SO ALL ALONE

Hi there. Im so so sorry you are going through this. I dont have children but I was a teen with depression. I think its great that he has a professional to talk to, and that he is trying out meds. There are, however, other meds & I suggest that he tries the other kinds b/c there might be one kind that doesnt make him sick. As far as not wanting to take them...hmm well Im 24 now & just accepted the idea of taking meds although Ive been taking them off & on for 9 yrs. So I honestly have to say for me that is a totally independent decision, no one was able to convince me. I hated taking them but now I just accepted that I want to move on with my life & if thats what I have to do to help me move on, then Ill do it. Obviously u love him a lot. My suggestions would be to try to be there for him & listen to him when he needs to talk but dont judge if he says something u dont like. The thing is, its hard to get teens to talk without them thinking u are just probing. I suppose talking about your personal life casually (without making it obvious that u want him to talk) would be the best way? Im not sure but its worth a shot. Im sorry u feel alone but u came to a good place & the ppl here are super nice. Keep coming & let us know how everything is going. I am thinking of u, HUGS
