Depression, Lexapro and Weight Gain HELP
| Sun, 10-31-2004 - 6:49am |
Hi I am new here, but my biggest problem is weight gain! I feel as though the Lexapro 20mg is causing me a weight gain. I talked to my Doctor about it and all he said was that it could cause me to eat more, but not specifically weight gain, oooook, is all I thought about that. I figure if you eat more then wouldn't you gain weight.
But anyways I was wondering if while on this SSRI medication if you know of any OTC weight control options I could possibly take to help with the hunger issues.
Thanks
Heather
You can email me at: cowart1977@insightbb.com

herbalife worked great for me, but i exercise a lot.
also, u can ask ur doc to put u on topamax, a mood stabilizer, for weight loss. i mean it.
many docs do this for their patients.
some ppl just take it for weight loss.
i know a psychiatrist who is taking it just for weight loss.
all ssri's cause weight gain, and the higher u go, the more weight gain it causes:
zoloft, celexa, lexapro, paxil, prozac, etc, so u r not alone.
wellbutrin sr or xr, an anti-depressive, i forgot the extra initials heheh dz not cause weight gain, but it is not an ssri.
u could also ask him ab. that med.
topamax works, it certainly works, but u have to start verrrry slowly.
not every doc will do this. beg him. hehhehe
25mg for every 10 days.
then 50mg for 10 days etc.
or it can cause neurological probs, if u titrate up toooo quickly.
ask him ab. topamax. good stuff.
if not, ask me ab herbalife. also good stuff.
also u have to drink lots of water and exercise to lose weight.
i wz on an ssri for a while and i never gained weight. and this wz b4 herbalife
i drank tons of water and exercised try that too. good luck

Hi Heather,
I understand exactly where you are coming from! I have gained 25 lbs from antidepressants. * OMG * It is not fun, I've weaned myself off of Lexapro. I feel that it was making me so tired that I couldn't function, diet or even think about working out! I'm not saying that you will gain weight but you will definately have to watch what you eat! I craved greasy pizza, wings, breadsticks ect.... Items that are not normally in my regular diet, lol! I was on Zoloft before Lexapro for 6 months so I'm not blaming the weight on Lexapro completely but I think it helped. I have to tell you my side-effects are terrible. I just feel like my body is like lead, my head is filled with cotton (very lightheaded and zombie like) :), I just cannot feel like that. I just think that if you make it a point to workout and watch what you eat that you will be fine. You didn't say how much weight that you had gained. Keep me posted on how your doing! I went from 125 lbs to 150 and that fluctuates sometimes! Good luck!
