Need new psyc doc, how to find good one?

Hi, I am relatively new here (posted a few times) and this seems like a really supportive bunch. So I was wondering if you could help with how to go about finding a good psyciatrist. I had one I was seeing for about a year and a half, then I quit seeing him when I got off my medication to get pregnant. I have been off medication for 2 years now (during the time we were ttc, during pregnancy, and during breastfeeding). I have known for some time now that I am depressed again, and need to get on medication again. I am on a 3 month waiting list to get back into my old psyc doctor, but I really can't wait that long. I know my family practice doc will prescribe me something, but I'd really feel more comfortable seeing a psyciatrist, as I also have problems with anxiety, and I know my family practice doctor just isn't that informed regarding psyc meds. So, my question is, how do I go about finding a good psyciatrist since I really can't wait on mine? Just randomly pick someone? Or do I wait to see my old one? If I wait to see him, do I just self-prescribe zoloft (family doc will give me whatever I ask for, basically) in the meantime? Sorry for so many questions. I'm just confused as to what course of action I should take.

Thanks!
