Questions RE: Xanax *more/ triggers*

I am new to Ivillage and was directed by a friend of mine. My older sister is currently taking Xanax for anxiety and was just released from the hospital (swallowed two bottles of OTC sleeping pills) and back in her apartment. We are trying to get over to see her at least every second day (we call every day) but we can't be there all the time. I am taking care of having her prescriptions filled and wanted to know if I should be doing it on a weekly or monthly basis. She is taking 2mg Xanax at night and worry that she may try to overdose on them. The problem being is that it's about half the cost to buy them by the month rather than weekly and she is not working and on a very limited budget.

I guess my question is: what is the 'overdose' dosage for Xanax and should I be worried if she has a 30 day prescription (of 2mg tablets) or is that not something to worry about. I tried calling her Dr. but he is away at a conference until next Tuesday and I don't want to be worrying for the next 8 days.

Thanks,
Andrea

Hi. Just a thought but maybe you can fill her prescription once a month as it is cheaper but only give her a few days worth when you visit her until you can check with her Dr.

Welcome Andrea!

Listen, i know that it costs more, but if she recently took an overdose, even if a month's worth of Xanax isn't going to kill her, the chances of her taking another overdose

peace and love,

Thank you both for your reply. I appreciate the input from you both. It's good to know that the Dr. was not completely off his rocker to give her a months prescription for Xanax since it would not be something she could overdose on. We are going to have a family meeting in the next couple of days and determine what we are going to do to make things safe and easy for her.

Thank you again,
Andrea
