They have an early warning pregnancy test of some kind that you can ask your pharmacist about. But I would call one of those acute care places and ask about the morning after pill. It might be too late to take it, but it's worth a shot. The morning after pill is not an abortion because it just keeps the egg from being fertilized in the first place. You have like 5 days after sex that the egg can still drop and be fertilized. That's what a lot of people don't know. They think that if they know when they are ovulating, then they are safe, but the egg hangs out awhile and the sperm hangs out awhile, so there's a long period of time when you can get pregnant.
Please call your local acute care or even a hospital to find out if you can get a prescription for the morning after pill.
Good Luck,
MariaC
Cal70 is right, sperm can live up to 5 days inside of a woman, BUT only if she has fertile-type cervical fluid ("discharge" that looks/feels like stretchy egg-whites)She is also right about ovulation. Ovulation takes place over a period of about 24 hours, so it really is a small window. Most women ovulate between Day 12 and Day 18 of their cycle, if their cycles are about 26-32 days long. Very few ovulate on Day 14, which is what we have always been taught. So figure out the day you STARTED your last period and count forward to find out where you are. Or you can figure out when you are DUE to start your period and count backwards.
The "morning after pill" works in two ways however, to clear up some confusion. Yes, it can prevent you from ovulating if you were about to when you had sex. (It's really just an amped-up version of "the pill") If you have ALREADY ovulated and your egg has ALREADY been fertilized, it will create a hostile environment in your uterus so that the egg cannot implant. Most doctors will tell you that you have 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex that you could take the pill and it would be effective.
SO, if your egg did become fertilized on Wednesday night, it will take 7-10 days for it to travel to your uterus and implant. A pregnancy test will NOT show positive until the egg implants, because your body will not produce HcG (the pregnancy hormone) until the egg implants. HOWEVER, you do NOT have to miss a period before you find out. I found out I was pregnant with my second child 5 days before my period was due and with my third pregnancy 6 days before my period was due. It all depends on how much HcG your body produces. I would advise that you take a First Response Early test 5ish days before you think you are due to start your period. You can get these at any drugstore for about $10.
Taking the test early will give you a couple advantages. Firstly, the sooner you get a positive HOME test, the sooner you can request a blood test to confirm it. The earlier you confirm it, the better. That way, if you decide to go through with the pregnancy, the sooner you can make plans for a healthy pregnancy, especially if this includes stopping any meds you may be on that could be harmful. (I became pregnant due to birth control failure while taking a mood stabilizer that can cause neural tube defects) The other advantage of finding out early is that if you haven't missed a period yet and you decide that you do not want to continue the pregnancy, there are things you can discuss with your doctor that would induce menstruation. It is a form of abortion, called medical abortion. You take a series of pills and you do it at home. For many women, it can be difficult emotionally as well as physically but many women prefer it over waiting and having a surgical abortion at a hospital.
Having said that, if you are pregnant and choose to be a mother, there is plenty of support out there! I had my first baby at 21 and my second at 23 and I didn't know how I was going to do it, but I did and now my children are 6 and almost-4 and are the joys of my life. I had help along the way with subsidized housing, subsidized childcare, WIC, help with college classes, etc. (Sure, it took me 6 years to get through 4 years of college, but I DID IT!) Now, I am a wise old woman of 27 (lol) and having my two kiddos was worth all the struggles.
So first, take a DEEP breath and realize that there is a bigger chance that you're NOT pregnant than the chance that you ARE. And take it one step at a time, educating yourself on all options so that you can make the best choice for you.
hey,
wow thanx for such helpful advice. firstly i think i come on my period round bout the 11th so i will take the test round the 7th. i feel sick and queasy, is that paranoia? im going through so much right now i dnt want to be pregnant but i dnt want to have an abortion..
I just wanted to add that when my SIL was pregnant she took a home test and it said she was pregnant.
Sami,
I'm sorry to hear you're going through this; it must be stressful for you, esp. with exams. I've been following the posts and I just want to tell you that I've been pregnant three times (lost 2nd to miscarriage) and each time I have tested negative until several days after my period was due. Even with the super-sensitive ones, you may get a false-negative and be wasting your money (they're expensive!). A fertilized egg takes a week to implant. I really don't think you can be sure of your results until *at least* two weeks after you had unprotected sex. You get your period 14 days after ovulation, so if you are still negative after, say, 16 days, you can be pretty sure that it's accurate.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but maybe you'll even get your period before then.
Best wishes,
Nicola
