Question about ADs & sedatives
| Sun, 01-02-2005 - 9:08pm |
I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow and an appointment with my therapist on Wednesday. I really like them both, so it's not that I'm nervous about the appointments. I'm currently taking 30 mg of Prozac daily, and while Prozac does work for me, I feel as though I need something more. I'm wondering if my doctor would prescribe me some kind of sedative that I could take when I'm feeling really bad, which is usually at night. Is this possible? Is anyone else taking an anti-depressant, but also has a prescription for a sedative that they only take when they feel they need it? I suppose that if my doctor doesn't think it's a good idea, I could talk to my therapist about it, and he may be able to convince my doctor that it's something I need.

I have always had problems sleeping and the intrusive thoughts were/are worse at night so my doc prescribed Trazodone for me and it's worked wonderfully. Sure I still occasionally have a bad night but nowhere near as often as before. I don't feel drowsy the next day either. It's actually an AD too and not officially a sedative. Maybe it's worth talking to your doc about it?

I went to the doctor this morning, so I just got your message now. He actually prescribed Trazodone for me, too. He gave me a low dosage - 50 mg - because he wants me to keep taking my 30 mg of Prozac daily, too. I'm really looking forward to trying it.

Good deal! I think you'll be happy with it. I take 50 mg. at night too. My doc prescribed me 100 mg. but usually I just cut them in half. A word of warning though, don't be discouraged if it appears not to work the first night. It didn't for me the first night either. I think my body was just SO used to not sleeping it didn't know what had hit it! ;-)

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely keep that in mind.
